This topic describes the causes of overdue payments and how to view and handle overdue payments of ApsaraVideo Media Processing (MPS).
Causes of overdue payments
The following table describes the reasons why payments for your MPS service become overdue in different scenarios.
Scenario | Cause |
You have not purchased resource plans. | If the total amount of your account balance, vouchers, and coupons within your Alibaba Cloud account is less than the payable amount, an overdue payment is generated for your account. |
You have purchased a resource plan. | If the resource usage exceeds the quota of the resource plan or the resource usage fees cannot be offset from the resource plan, and the total amount of your account balance, vouchers, and coupons within your Alibaba Cloud account is less than the payable amount, an overdue payment is generated for your account. |
Billing cycle
The billing cycle of MPS is 1 hour. A bill is generated every hour. The fees are deducted in real time after a bill is generated.
Billing cycle | Bill generation time and fee deduction time | Billable item |

Example
The transcoding jobs that a user submitted were processed in the time range from 11:00:00 to 12:00:00 on November 10, 2023.
After 12:00:00 on November 10, 2023, MPS started to collect statistics on the jobs completed in the time range from 11:00:00 to 12:00:00.
In this example, MPS generated a bill for the jobs completed in the preceding time range 2 hours later, which means that a bill was generated at 14:00:00 on November 10, 2023. Fees were immediately deducted after the bill was generated.
Service suspension
You are notified if your services are about to be suspended due to an overdue payment. To prevent negative impacts on your business, we recommend that you add funds to your account or renew resource plans at the earliest opportunity.
MPS
If an overdue payment is generated and the conditions for service suspension protection provided by Alibaba Cloud are met, MPS continues to provide services.
NoteAlibaba Cloud supports the extended suspension service. During an extended suspension period, you can still use pay-as-you-go resources if overdue payments occur and the overdue amount does not reach the extended suspension quota. You are still charged for using the pay-as-you-go resources within the extended suspension period. The overdraft threshold is not equal to the maximum overdue payment that is allowed. The overdraft threshold is automatically calculated and updated on a monthly basis based on the consumption records of your Alibaba Cloud account.
If the conditions for service suspension protection are not met, MPS automatically stops providing services. Take note of the following items if MPS stops providing services:
You cannot submit jobs in the MPS console or by calling API operations. For example, you cannot submit a transcoding job, a snapshot job, a media information analysis job, an intelligent production job, a smart tagging job, a media review job, an image and text moderation job, a video quality moderation job, a media fingerprint job, a job of importing text files to a text fingerprint library, or a job of creating a media fingerprint library.
The jobs that are submitted but still waiting in MPS queues are suspended.
MPS continues to run the jobs that are in progress. You are charged for the jobs that are successfully run. In this case, the overdue amount continues to increase.
If you settle the overdue payment within 360 hours after the time when MPS stops providing services, MPS is automatically resumed.
The jobs stopped due to the overdue payment are automatically resumed. The resource consumption time of a job depends on the time when the job is completed. Therefore, the jobs submitted before the overdue payment are included in the bill generated after you settle the overdue payment.
If you do not settle the overdue payment within 360 hours after the time when MPS stops providing services, Alibaba Cloud assumes that you no longer use MPS. Alibaba Cloud terminates the service terms of MPS and no longer provides you with services that are related to MPS. Your data that is stored on Alibaba Cloud is deleted and cannot be restored.
Other Alibaba Cloud services
When you use MPS, you may need to activate other Alibaba Cloud services. The following table describes the overdue payments of the related Alibaba Cloud services and provides links to the billing information about these services.
Service | Description | References |
Object Storage Service (OSS) | The input files and output files of MPS are stored in OSS buckets. If an overdue payment is generated and the conditions for service suspension protection are not met, OSS automatically stops providing services. The data stored in OSS buckets is retained for 15 days.
Message Service (MNS) | You can receive notifications about MPS by using MNS. If you do not settle an overdue payment within 24 hours after the overdue payment is generated, you can no longer use the API operations of MNS. After the specified validity period ends, unprocessed messages are automatically deleted and cannot be restored.
Key Management Service (KMS) | You can create and manage encryption keys for Alibaba Cloud proprietary cryptography and HTTP-Live-Streaming (HLS) encryption methods in MPS by using KMS. KMS uses the subscription billing method. Therefore, no overdue payment is generated. If your KMS instance expires, the instance is immediately suspended and no longer provides services. Your KMS instance is released on the 16th day after your KMS instance expires.
CloudMonitor | You can configure alert rules to monitor the request success rate and transcoding data in CloudMonitor. | For more information about billing, see the CloudMonitor official documentation. |
ApsaraVideo VOD | After the content of MPS files is transcoded, you can accelerate the delivery of the content by using ApsaraVideo VOD. If an overdue payment is generated, the accelerated domains that you have configured in ApsaraVideo VOD are disabled.
Alibaba Cloud CDN (CDN) | After the content of MPS files is transcoded, you can accelerate the delivery of the content based on CDN nodes when you use the Media Library feature. If an overdue payment is generated and the conditions for service suspension protection are not met, CDN is immediately suspended, the accelerated domains are disabled, and the status of the domains becomes Offline. The CNAMEs of the domain names are mapped to the invalid address: offline.***.com. As a result, the domain names become inaccessible. |
