About Mynet

Mobile game provider Mynet Inc. acquires game titles developed by other companies, and extends the longevity of those games. Recently, the company has been working on new in-house game development, as well as contracted game development. The company is also planning to diversify into sports.

Challenge

Most online games have a specific form of infrastructure and servers on the backend. Mynet’s challenge is to control infrastructure costs and improve performance in this environment, while optimizing their cost structure by properly addressing infrastructure costs, which are often treated as fixed costs in the games industry.

Why Alibaba Cloud

Mynet believed that Alibaba Cloud would be an excellent choice for their business model of extending the longevity of game titles, as they offered attractive pricing while integrating new technologies.

Many Japanese companies are still slow to invest in security, believing it a low priority. Keen on strengthening their global outlook, Mynet were impressed with the fact that Alibaba Cloud offered balanced solutions, able to deal well with the complexity of security issues, such as the handling of personal data and in-game purchases.

Architecture

Mynet uses Alibaba Cloud products for company-wide infrastructure across game titles and for migrations required by their business model.

A typical Mynet game system consists of API, database, Tair (Redis® OSS-compatible), and resource server. All units are configured with Elastic Compute Service (ECS). Cost-effective AMD instances are also actively used.

A subscription contract is used to specify the required number of instances launched during the day, and secure the number of instances launched during peak hours through Auto Scaling in the pay-as-you-go format.

As for the database, PolarDB is mainly used, while Serverless Edition is released for some game titles, to ensure that resources can be automatically and speedily scaled up during peak hours. Additionally, engineers can easily optimize queries by identifying bottlenecks based on the diagnostic capabilities of Database Autonomy Service (DAS).

Tair (Redis® OSS-Compatible) is able to store volatile and non-volatile data, such as ranking data, and its usage is almost identical to that of Redis OSS. Object Storage Service (OSS) is used for object storage, used as a source for static content such as asset files, and a cache and source for some dynamically generated content. CDN is used to deliver content to end users.

Application logs are collected and aggregated by Simple Log Service (SLS), which is also used to check error logs and generate alerts by specifying threshold values.

Security Center manages all computing resources not only in Alibaba Cloud, but also in other cloud environments. The company-wide infrastructure is built on Function Compute, which fully manages OS/middleware information collected by installed agents and compares the OS/middleware information with CVSS information to notify instances that require updates on a daily basis.

Data Transmission Service (DTS) is used for migration across clouds. Settings can be configured for large-scale data migration and complex synchronization in the intuitive console, which greatly reduces the time and effort required for data migration from or to databases and Tair (Redis® OSS-compatible).

An Express Connect circuit of Cloud Enterprise Network (CEN) is used to transfer data for backup and analysis to other clouds, while ensuring secure communication.
