Alibaba Cloud BYOIP: A Smooth Cloud Migration Enabler

In this post, we'll show you how Alibaba Cloud BYOIP can help you smoothen your migration journey to the cloud.

By Alibaba Cloud Network Team

What Is BYOIP

Alibaba Cloud's Apsara Cloud Network System team announced a full upgrade of its Elastic IP Address (EIP) service to the Bring Your Own IP Address (BYOIP) solution at the Alibaba Cloud Enterprise Globalization Network New Products launch. The BYOIP solution relies on Alibaba's global infrastructure and is comprehensively integrated with EIP, global multi-line BGP, Anti-DDoS Basic, and Hybrid Cloud public bandwidth plans to build an all-scenario cloud-based network for smooth and safe migration to clouds.

Challenges with Cloud Migration

Cloud migration is an irreversible trend for enterprises. Compared with conventional IT solutions, cloud solutions can halve overall costs and exponentially increase stability and security. Cloud migration has become a catalyst for enterprises to accelerate digital transformation. However, traditional enterprises are confronted with the following challenges during their cloud migration:

  1. IP addresses must stay unchanged due to business requirements, such as the services that depend on an IP address whitelist, the system architecture that depends on IP addresses, and regulatory and compliance requirements.
  2. One single network line is currently in use, with higher latency, poorer elasticity, and slower scaling, making it unable to quickly respond to market demands.
  3. The security capability enterprises develop on their own is weak and lacks high-level Anti-DDoS protection. The entire line will become unavailable once attacked.

How Can BYOIP Help?

Alibaba Cloud BYOIP allows enterprises to bring their own IPv4 address range from on-premises networks to their Alibaba Cloud account. Enterprises can continue to own the address range but Alibaba Cloud advertises it on the Internet by default. They can bind the IP addresses to Alibaba Cloud services such as Elastic Compute Service (ECS), NAT Gateway, Server Load Balancer (SLB), and Elastic Network Interface (ENI) to enable public network access.

Targeting full data migration to cloud, Alibaba Cloud BYOIP can help enterprises retain their public IP addresses after migration by relying on three major capabilities: BYOIP advertisement, global multi-line BGP bandwidth, and Anti-DDoS Basic. This minimizes the transformation cost for cloud migration and the loss caused by business downtime. After bringing their own public IP addresses to Alibaba Cloud, enterprises can gain quick access to Alibaba Cloud's global 89-line BGP resources and bandwidth elasticity exceeding 100 Gbps, which is equivalent to Alibaba Cloud EIPs. Relying on its global cleaning centers, as well as its GRE tunnels, cross connect, physical connections and other reinjection protection services, Alibaba Cloud provides global uncapped protection of Anycast with an overall capacity exceeding eight Tbps.

Using BYOIP for Global Scenarios

Targeting enterprises' globalization scenarios, Alibaba Cloud BYOIP helps optimize international business access of enterprises based on the BYOIP advertisement and EIP lines. The solution focuses on addressing cross-border access latency in the scenario where enterprise servers are deployed outside of mainland China but the services are targeted to clients in mainland China. EIP lines primarily serve the China (Hong Kong) and Singapore (Singapore) regions, and are developed based on the high-quality bandwidth resources of Alibaba, China Telecom, China Unicom, China Mobile, and other carriers. Compared with multi-line BGP, EIP services are connected back to China through the underlying network, which not only eliminates the need to connect to international carriers but also reduces latency by at least 60% to meet the needs of latency-sensitive services, such as gaming, online education, audio and video conferencing, and finance.

Building Hybrid Clouds with BYOIP

Targeting enterprises' hybrid cloud scenarios, Alibaba Cloud BYOIP connects off-premises and on-premises systems and data through Express Connect based on BYOIP advertisement and hybrid cloud public bandwidth plans. This not only resolves the unrealized amortization of existing assets, but also addresses the challenge of cutting the overhead of idled resources resulting from the underutilization of existing resources, when cloud migration puts great pressure on IT cost. This ensures the enterprises have zero interruption for business and zero costs for dedicated maintenance, with smooth migration and lower O&M costs.

Challenges with Cloud Migration

Zhu Shunmin, a researcher in Alibaba Cloud's Apsara Cloud Network System team, pointed out that, "Alibaba Cloud BYOIP starts from enterprise clients' pain points and respects enterprises' needs for personalized development in its endeavors to change the status quo of single network lines, poor elasticity, and weak protection capabilities in enterprises. Based on an innovative practice of keeping IP addresses unchanged, the solution makes full use of the cloud network capabilities to meet enterprise demands for real-time, on-demand, and elastic networks, and answer clients' calls regarding latency, frame freezing, and reliability in different industries to improve the user experience as much as possible."

Network is the first to migrate data to cloud. Alibaba Cloud BYOIP is now available to multiple regions around the world including China (Hong Kong), US (Virginia), US (Silicon Valley), UK (London), Germany (Frankfurt), India (Mumbai), Australia (Sydney), Japan (Tokyo), Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur), Indonesia (Jakarta), UAE (Dubai), and Singapore (Singapore) to empower enterprises in their comprehensive transformation from offline networks to cloud networks for a greater business success.
