Why Cyber Resilience is Important for Keeping your Data Safe?

The speed at which different cyberattacks are evolving necessitates the need to establish a cybersecurity and data privacy plan.

Ransomware has continued to evolve significantly since its outset, implying that its malicious objectives are improving. It's becoming increasingly complex and dangerous, and it will only grow worse. However, ransomware isn't the only cybersecurity danger of which businesses must be wary. Wiperware has become common in 2022.

Cyber Attacks Throughout History

Prior to 2022

● Malware: A type of data theft to make a profit.
● Ransomware: A data encryption attack with a financial motive.

2022 and Afterwards

● Malware: A type of data theft to make a profit.
● Ransomware: A data encryption attack with a financial motive.
● Wiperware: A data deletion attack with the aim of causing chaos.

What exactly is Ransomware?

Ransomware is a type of cyberattack in which an attacker infiltrates a company, government or personal network and encrypts all data, making it hard for the user to access it. The attacker can then demand payment for unlocking or decrypting the data and restoring it to its prior state. Yet, there's no guarantee of data decryption after payment.

What is the meaning of the term Wiperware?

Wiper attacks utilizing wiperware delete, overwrite or remove data from a victim. These attacks, unlike most cyber-attacks, do not have a financial motive. An attacker can also use a wiper virus to hide the evidence of an attack.

Wiperware has apparently been employed in Ukraine. Given the current situation in the world, it is not unreasonable to expect an increase in wiperware use in other regions or countries.

What are Cyber Security Measures and Cyber Resiliency?

Wiperware and ransomware pose a significant threat to cyber security and cyber resiliency. Cybersecurity refers to how an organization safeguards its data and assets from external threats like cyberattacks. Data protection in cyber security includes protecting infrastructure and systems and eliminating vulnerabilities to reduce the chance of a data breach.

Cyber resiliency is an extension of cybersecurity. It measures how to continue operations in the event of a data breach. Cyber resiliency is a backup plan in case attackers succeed. The goals of cyber resiliency are twofold: to secure critical data and recover quickly to restore normal operations.

High-profile VIPs, celebrities and wealthy people understand the distinction between security and resiliency. A VIP does not reside in a conventional suburban residence with minimal security measures. Multiple security mechanisms surround their properties, including perimeter walls, surveillance cameras, a gate with a security officer, guard dogs patrolling the premises, alarms and so on. They also have a backup plan as a resiliency measure. When all other security precautions fail and an intruder breaks into a VIP's residence, the VIP can retreat to a fortified room.

Organizations can copy VIPs and construct a fortified room for their Very Important Data (VID) to protect it from destructive malware, ransomware and wiperware.
