Alibaba: Internet-based architecture gradually becomes the first choice of new IT solutions for ente

“Our energy sources used to be water, electricity and coal. But now, data has become a new energy and resource created by humans.” In the just-concluded Computing Conference - Hangzhou Summit, Jack Ma made such a statement about data becoming a new energy, inspiring industry-wide thoughts on the incalculable value behind big data.

It is undeniable that data is experiencing exponential growth, but a view persists that the big data hasn’t brought any major changes to the enterprise. Regarding this, Jiehui Zhao, the middleware product director of Alibaba Cloud, holds that the traditional IT architecture must give way to the internet-based architecture to solve this problem.

“IT architecture has long been regarded as the most important element in IT support system construction of enterprises. With social information development, data has become a means of production. Traditional enterprises are challenged, not only in the need to open up the connection between data, but also in how to embed data in the business, so that data can help you make the decisions. This challenge can only be completed by the internet-based architecture,” said Jiehui Zhao.

In the cloud computing era, internet-based architecture becomes a rigid demand of enterprises.

Jack Ma threw out the viewpoint of “digitalize all businesses and make all data operational in the upcoming years” as early as several years ago. In the view of Jiehui Zhao, to achieve this high informatization target, enterprises should focus on the fundamental reform in their IT architecture.

“Digitalizing the business processes through cloud computing, and then providing support to the business through decision-making after big data analysis - this cannot be achieved in traditional IT architecture,” Jiehui Zhao said in the traditional IT architecture. Different business systems are completely isolated from each other. Even if you spend a lot of time and effort connecting various business systems, the final result will be no more than the accessibility to system B from system A, while data cannot be integrated, analyzed in real time, not to mention utilizing data to support decision-making for enterprise development.

Of course, the waste of data resources is just one of the manifestations of resource waste in traditional IT architecture. Traditional IT architecture, because of its “certainty” challenge, greatly impairs the enterprise development in the internet era. Traditional IT architecture has a fixed designed specification at the system establishment, including the user number and traffic it can support, and the businesses and scales it can cover. However, the difficulty of these “man-made configurations” is when the business demand is uncertain or the traffic flow is not regular, leaving enterprises “incapable of agile and elastic expansion and unable to respond fast”.

To solve these problems, the internet-based architecture is the only way out. “The agile, expandable, sharing and open natures of internet-based architecture enable elastic and rich functions and components, which is unmatched by traditional IT architecture.”

In the internet-based architecture model, enterprises will lease rather than buy computing resources, which means that the enterprise’s IT architecture can be purchased based on different business demands and strategies to automatically adjust elastic computing resources for applications. As a result, the resource portfolio can be optimized to provide services, avoiding energy-consuming and costly development and upgrading of infrastructure.

“The most important thing is that business systems built on this IT architecture will achieve sharing of resources. In Alibaba, even Taobao or amap.com, two different business systems, can share and analyze each other's data in real time. As a result, data silos can be fully avoided, and enterprises can become truly efficient and intelligent because of the new energy of data,” said Jiehui Zhao at the conference.

In recent years, an avant-garde voice has gone viral in the industry: traditional IT architecture will be replaced by internet-based architecture gradually. Jiehui Zhao holds that this is not contrived.

“Alibaba is already on this. After being tested and improved by seven Alibaba Singles’ Day, Alibaba architecture has grown into a reproducible and omnipotent architecture model,” Jiehui Zhao said with pride. The peak transaction volume on Singles’ Day of 2015 reached 140,000 transactions/second, and 85,900 payments/second. The massive data is supported by Alibaba’s enterprise-level internet-based architecture (Aliware).

It is beyond question that this enterprise-level internet-based architecture Aliware will bring fundamental changes to various industries. Previously, while many companies have been aware of the importance of data, they failed to start transforming the traditional IT architecture to internet-based architecture from storage and infrastructure because of the lack of internet and technical genes. Therefore, they also suffered many difficulties in data utilization. But with Alibaba’s release of a series of internet middleware products, this is becoming possible. Yiqun Liu, deputy general manager of the internet and collaboration application department of PCITC, experienced this himself.

“In the past, we undertook information construction projects for Sinopec, basically following the practice of one project for one information system - the chimney construction mode. With the arrival of the information age, such isolation between information systems makes it a problem for profound application of data to promote business development,” Liu said at the conference.

“Based on the enterprise-level internet-based architecture Aliware provided by Alibaba, we can set up a sharing center which includes a data layer for data sharing and a data layer for providing service modules,” Liu continued. The sharing center built under Aliware achieves efficient data sharing across applications. PCITC’s internet construction teams only spent 100 days from their first contact with the sharing center-based internet architecture to the launch of Epec.com. Since Epic.com was put online on April 1, 2015, its accumulated transaction value has exceeded 2.39 million yuan by August 2016, and the value is still on the rise.”

Of course, Sinopec is not the only case. Alibaba’s enterprise-level internet-based architecture has been providing external commercial services since years ago. It helps numerous traditional enterprises to accelerate the cloudization process leveraging its own strength. For example, China Huaneng Group introduced Alibaba’s EDAS mode in its e-business platform and as a result, the concurrency and processing performance of the system were greatly enhanced. Geely is also reforming its sales and after-sales systems with the help of Alibaba’s enterprise-level internet-based architecture Aliware.

Sources revealed that Apsara Aliware, a new enterprise-level internet-based architecture brand, was released at the conference. The five major product components, namely EDAS, DRDS, MQ, CSB and ARMS, all enjoy upgraded functions in the new version to better support this enterprise-level internet-based architecture.
