Royal Philips Case Study
Royal Philips Electronics is one of the largest electronics companies in the world. Headquartered in the Netherlands, Royal Philips employs approximately 104,000 employees with sales and services in more than 100 countries. The company has three primary business divisions, those being in electronics, healthcare and lighting. The company is a leading manufacturer of medical equipment for the healthcare industry, including cardiac care, acute care and home healthcare products. It also provides energy-efficient lighting solutions, new lighting applications, as well as grooming and oral healthcare products.
Royal Philips wanted to launch a cloud-based healthcare solution in China called HealthSuite Digital Platform to deliver services to help people cope with challenges related to urbanization and population growth. Philips wanted to achieve this goal by combining mobile, cloud computing and big data technologies.
A flagship offering to be launched on the HealthSuite Platform was the Philips Smart Air Purifier. This product would allow users to monitor their city’s air quality index, including data provided by the China Meteorological Administration and PM 2.5 index, as well as air quality in the home. Through the mobile app, users would be able to operate the Smart Air Purifier in real-time from anywhere and anytime. The user could also receive alerts on mobile devices from the intelligent purifier when the air quality reached unhealthy levels or when the filter needed replacement to take appropriate actions.
To bring this platform and product to market, Philips required cloud computing and local technical service capabilities in China, in addition to a flexible IT infrastructure that could handle user requests.
Why Alibaba Cloud?
After going through a stringent review process Philips came to the consensus of entrusting Alibaba Cloud's infrastructure to underwrite their cloud operations due to Alibaba Cloud's local technical support and built-in security. The Alibaba Cloud Pay-As-You-Go model for elasticity also made it a cost-effective solution.
Alibaba Cloud subsequently entered into an agreement to provide IT infrastructure services for Philips HealthSuite Digital Platform in China. Philips utilizes Alibaba Cloud Elastic Compute Service (ECS), Object Storage Service (OSS), ApsaraDB for RDS, and other security services and wireless communication infrastructure to deliver services to its customers.
This has enabled Philips to quickly roll out its healthcare services and focus on providing quality service to its customers, instead of spending time and resources building and installing an IT infrastructure to serve customers.
Philips has deployed multiple healthcare related applications powered on Alibaba Cloud. Each of which run on Elastic Compute Service (ECS) to provide scalability for applications.
The ECS servers connected to the Internet are then put through the Alibaba Cloud Server Load Balancer. This balances the incoming traffic from the Internet, making the applications highly available.
The new smart air purifier is also deployed on Alibaba Cloud’s cloud service and supports 2G, 3G, 4G, and Wi-Fi networks to deliver real-time connectivity. The device transmits data to the cloud periodically and responds to mobile app operations and data queries. The application also connects to the Philips global network for unified device authentication, data collection and summarization. Depending on network conditions, uplink data is initially cached locally and then uploaded to storage every hour. The app allows users to monitor data in their home environment and send control commands remotely.
