For more than a decade, the Double 11 Global Shopping Festival has continued to set new records. The Double 11 event is the biggest online shopping day in the global calendar, generating billions of dollars of sales and exceeding spending by consumers during any other shopping holiday.
The 2021 Double 11 Global Shopping Festival was the biggest yet with sales hitting a record US$84.54 billion in gross merchandise volume (GMV). This was all made possible by Alibaba Cloud.
For the last couple of years, 100 percent of Alibaba’s core systems run on the cloud for the event, enabling the company to handle hundreds of thousands of orders per second and maintain a focus on sustainability. Alibaba Cloud provides an extensive suite of cloud products and services that powered this ultra-scale shopping event and also protected the billions of online businesses and shoppers who took part in this huge shopping extravaganza.
We also saw carbon footprints plummet during the 2021 Double 11 Shopping Festival. This year, Alibaba used more state-of-the-art green technologies than ever to ensure environmentally friendly operations during this year's Double 11. This includes a reduction of 26,000 tonnes of carbon emission in the Zhangbei County data center using clean energy.
