When you containerize game servers and deploy them to Kubernetes, it seems quite straightforward. However, game servers have some unique requirements compared to microservices, leading to challenges when deploying them on Kubernetes.
For example, how to perform hot updates to game configurations without rebuilding Pod, causing interruptions in players' gaming experiences? Additionally, how can you support direct game server operations management? Using the classic IT metaphor of "Pets or Cattle," game server management leans towards "Pets" management to some extent. So, how to blend game server Pets management into Kubernetes Cattle management? How to meet the needs of complex game server architectures?
Welcome to Cloud Forward, where we go back to basics and talk about everything cloud-centric, from Infrastructure, Computing, Storage, Network, Security, to Database, AI, and Machine Learning.
In this series, we will talk about OpenKruise Game. Alibaba Cloud launched the project as a Kubernetes abstraction for best practices for gaming containers.
The second episode of cloud native game solution series introduces the cloud-native game workload OpenKruiseGame, and how it meets the needs of complex game server architectures.
Watch the videos below for a comprehensive understanding.
OpenKruiseGame (OKG) is a multicloud-oriented, open-source Kubernetes workload specialized for game servers. OKG simplifies the cloud-native transformation of game servers as a custom Kubernetes workload. Compared to built-in Kubernetes workloads like Deployment and StatefulSet, OKG provides common game server management features such as hot updates, in-place upgrades, and directed management.
