Project Introduction

The project aims to detect forest fires before it becomes wildfire by using drone surveillance in thermal hotspot areas detected by the satellite images and simulates the wildfire to understand the impact and rate of spread of the fire to better mitigate the challenge by earl detection and solution design.

Solution and Project Value

Wildfires have started becoming more and more frequent with increasing sizes, impacts and intensity. Wildfires can disrupt transportation, communications, power and gas services and water supply. Wildfires are happening more often due to climate change. Due to its random occurrences, it's hard to predict wildfire occurrences.

This solution focuses on early detection rather than the prediction of wildfires. When a thermal hotspot is detected by satellites, an alert system is created and the drones are sent to the location for surveillance. The forest fire detection is done by computer vision and deep learning. The drone is connected to Alibaba cloud with 4G network to send the images for detection and simulation of the forest fire. The system has a cloud base architecture which can be scaled up on a global level. The solution helps the fire fighters to better understand the fire behavior and take suitable methods for fire suppression

Wildfire has severe economic and ecological impacts. The main value the project is its ability to detect forest fires before it becomes wildfires. The solution is comprised of technology, AI and people. This solution can help fire fighters to detect forest fires in its early stages. Early detection can help the fire fighters to alert the communities living in the vicinity and help them evacuate the places where the wildfire is predicted to spread. The simulation model, which simulates the forest fire, can be used to assess the potential impact and the rate of spread of the wild fire which is key step in deciding suppression strategies.

Technology Highlights

AI is used in forest fire detection. The drone surveillance footage/images sent to the Alibaba cloud were the detection using computer vision and deep learning. The authorities are alerted for any fire activity in that area.

Computer vision and deep learning models are deployed in the Alibaba cloud. The whole system is deployed in the Alibaba cloud for efficient and fast results. Alibaba cloud's web hosting, ECS and OSS are used in this system.

Drone technology is used for surveillance of the alerted fire location Spatial mapping technology of ArcGIS is used to get the 3D model of the landscape to better understand the wildfire
