When choosing a model, many users and teams fall into two common traps:
Trap #1: Using a flagship model for lightweight batch tasks. It's like using a butcher's knife to cut chicken—the knife works fine, but you're overpaying.
Trap #2: Using a lightweight model for heavy tasks and having to redo the work. It looks cheap upfront, but when you factor in the cost of rework, it ends up more expensive than just using a flagship model from the start.
If any of this sounds familiar, this guide is for you. Let's walk through how to use our models effectively—what scenarios they're best for, what tiers are available, how they differ in capability and pricing, and what the best combinations look like.
The Qwen series is organized into three tiers based on capability: Max, Plus, and Flash.
| Tier | Best For | Representative Models |
|---|---|---|
| Max | High-difficulty coding, complex reasoning, long-running tasks that run for days without human intervention | Qwen3.8-Max, Qwen3.7-Max |
| Plus | Everyday coding, vision understanding, OCR, tool calling, GUI agents | Qwen3.7-Plus |
| Flash | High-frequency lightweight tasks: classification, summarization, task routing, lightweight agent calls | Qwen3.8-Flash, Qwen3.7-Flash, Qwen3.6-Flash |
Note: Qwen3.8-Max, Qwen3.7-Max, Qwen3.7-Plus, Qwen3.8-Flash, and Qwen3.6-Flash are all available through Token Plan subscription. Other models can be selected from the Model Studio for pay-as-you-go pricing. Each tier also has additional open-source versions—check the Model Studio for the full list.
Max Tier
The Max tier is the most capable in the Qwen series, designed specifically for high-difficulty coding, complex reasoning, and long-running tasks that need to operate continuously for extended periods without human intervention. It supports the full suite of capabilities including Function Calling, structured output, web search, context caching, and batch inference—making it ideal for scenarios that demand the highest level of intelligence.
For example, if you want the model to handle an entire data analysis project on its own—from requirements analysis through code implementation to debugging—running for days without needing a human to take over, 3.8-Max is the right choice. 3.8-Max offers nighttime discounts, but these are only available to Token Plan subscribers. If you use the Max tier heavily, a Token Plan subscription will be more cost-effective.
Plus Tier
The Plus tier is the workhorse for everyday tasks. It combines thinking and non-thinking modes, with reasoning capabilities significantly improved over the previous generation and general-purpose performance reaching SOTA levels for its model size. It supports context lengths up to 1M tokens and delivers detailed, clear performance in mathematics, logical reasoning, and knowledge Q&A.
For example, if you need the model to extract amounts and dates from invoice images, or automatically fill in web form data, 3.7-Plus can handle it.
Flash Tier
The Flash tier is the go-to choice for lightweight, high-frequency tasks, prioritizing ultra-fast response times and low cost. It also supports switching between thinking and non-thinking modes, and performs well in complex reasoning, instruction following, and text understanding. With 1M context support and tiered pricing based on length, it retains key capabilities like Function Calling, web search, and batch inference—making it ideal for high-concurrency or latency-sensitive applications.
For example, in a customer service scenario where you first classify user questions—answering simple ones directly and routing complex ones to human agents—or automatically summarizing hundreds of news articles daily, 3.8-Flash's fast processing speed makes it well-suited for this kind of batch work.
For small teams building agent products: Use Plus for everyday coding and tool calls, and reserve Max for only the hardest 5% of tasks. The vast majority of calls will land on the cheaper tier, with Max handling only the most challenging tasks to ensure quality.
For everyday coding: Plus tier is all you need.
For high-difficulty coding and complex reasoning: Choose Max tier when you need the latest autonomous capabilities.
For high-volume content pipelines (summarization / classification / extraction): Flash can handle the volume, while Max only needs to spot-check the difficult portions. There's no need to run your entire pipeline on a flagship model.
For enterprise document understanding and extraction: Use Max for high-difficulty tasks; for everyday OCR and frontend-type scenarios, Plus is sufficient.
For vision understanding, OCR, and tool calling: These all fall under the Plus tier's strengths. If your main work is OCR and frontend pages, Plus can handle it.
The smart approach isn't to use one model for everything, but to "route" tasks: let Flash or Plus handle the initial response, and switch to Max only when you're uncertain about the result or the task itself is particularly challenging. The vast majority of calls will land on the cheaper tier, with Max handling only the difficult tasks.
The reverse also works: start with Max to establish a quality benchmark, then work your way down tier by tier until you find the cheapest tier that still delivers stable quality—that's your cost baseline.
Start with Flash or Plus, and upgrade only if the task proves too complex.
For example, run your task on 3.8-Flash first. If the quality doesn't meet your expectations, upgrade to Plus or Max. You can switch models directly via CLI—just change one line of configuration, no code changes needed.
Start with a smaller model and add your own quality check step. If it passes consistently, keep using it. If it doesn't meet expectations, move up a tier. Adjust dynamically based on your actual needs.
Choosing a model isn't about picking the most expensive one—it's about finding the right match: the right tier for the right task. Pricing and promotions are subject to the latest listings on the Model Studio. We recommend running your own real tasks across candidate tiers before making a decision—the same approach you use to test quality will also help you test cost.
