Last week, Alibaba continues advancing its AI capabilities, driving innovations in image generation, early cancer detection, and digital manga creation. Key highlights include the launch of Qwen VLo, an advanced multimodal model for content understanding and generation, the introduction of the GRAPE AI tool for gastric cancer detection, and a strategic partnership to transform Japan’s manga industry through AI.
Alibaba introduced Qwen VLo, a sophisticated multimodal AI model that significantly enhances content understanding and generation capabilities compared to its predecessor, Qwen2.5-VL. The new model delivers improved accuracy and consistency across a variety of multimodal tasks, including multilingual inputs in Chinese and English.
Utilizing a progressive generation approach, Qwen VLo systematically builds images, continuously refining its output for superior coherence and visual quality. This method provides users greater flexibility and precise creative control.

Qwen VLo supports direct image generation and editing functionalities, such as background replacement, subject addition, style transfer, and complex modifications based on open-ended instructions. The model also excels in detection and segmentation tasks, demonstrating its deep comprehension of visual and textual contexts. It can creatively reinterpret inputs, transforming cartoon into photorealistic images or abstract renderings.
Currently in preview, Qwen VLo can be experienced through Alibaba’s Qwen Chat platform.

Gastric cancer (GC) is a leading global health challenge, ranking fifth in cancer incidence and fourth in cancer-related deaths. Early detection dramatically improves survival rates, yet screening remains limited, especially in developing countries.
To tackle this issue, Alibaba’s DAMO Academy developed GRAPE (Gastric Cancer Risk Assessment Procedure with Artificial Intelligence), a deep-learning framework that analyzes 3D non-contrast CT scans to detect and segment gastric cancer. Recent research demonstrates that GRAPE significantly outperforms radiologists in accuracy, increasing sensitivity by 21.8% and specificity by 14.0%, particularly for early-stage GC detection. Notably, GRAPE also identifies cases initially missed by human experts.
DAMO Academy plans to collaborate with Zhejiang Cancer Hospital to deploy GRAPE for widespread GC screening across Zhejiang and Anhui provinces.
