Alibaba Group recently announced that it has joined the Global Enabling Sustainability Initiative (GeSI), a global organization at the intersection of digital innovation and sustainable development. As a global technology company, Alibaba Group brings extensive experience across cloud computing, artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, e-commerce.

Through its GeSI membership, Alibaba Group expects to share practical experience, contribute to industry standards, and strengthen implementation across regions and sectors.

As digital infrastructure becomes central to both economic competitiveness and global sustainability agenda, including climate solutions, Alibaba Group sees an opportunity to work alongside GeSI members on three shared priorities: sustainable data centers, AI for sustainability, and green digital transformation. Notably, Alibaba Group will participate in GeSi’s Global AI Network for Impact (GAIN) initiative to contribute to the advancement of global AI governance framework.

“We are pleased to welcome Alibaba Group as a new member, further strengthening GeSi’s global, cross-sector community at the intersection of digital innovation and sustainable development.” Said Luís Neves, CEO of GeSI. “Alibaba Group’s membership adds practical insight, digital scale and international perspective to GeSI’s work in advancing solutions that can deliver measurable benefits for people, business and the planet. We look forward to working with Alibaba Group and our GeSi members to support greener digital infrastructure, the responsible application of AI to sustainability challenges, and the wider digital transformation needed for a low-carbon and resilient future”

“Joining GeSI reflects our belief that the next wave of digital growth must be sustainable growth,” said Wang Zhaoyang, General Manager of Global Data Centers, Alibaba Cloud Intelligence. “We see two responsibilities going hand in hand: making our cloud and AI infrastructure greener, and putting AI to work on the problems that matter — helping businesses measure and cut emissions, operate more efficiently, and unlock new opportunities. From energy-efficient cloud infrastructure to AI tools that help businesses measure and reduce emissions, we want to turn digital scale into climate action. We look forward to collaborating with ICT companies, international organizations, and other stakeholders through GeSI to shape greener, smarter digital systems.”

Alibaba Group has set a carbon-neutrality target for Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030, aims to halve Scope 3 emissions intensity by 2030, and is working to drive 1.5 gigatons of decarbonization across its ecosystem by 2035. As an infrastructure provider for a greener economy, Alibaba Cloud will take the lead and aim to achieve scope 1, 2 and 3 carbon neutrality by 2030.

In the 2026 fiscal year, Alibaba increased clean electricity use in its self-built data centers to 73.6 percent, optimized its own data-center power usage effectiveness (PUE) to 1.187, and actively engaged with supply chain partners to collectively optimize energy and emissions performances and make emission disclosure more accurate and transparent.
