Smart Access Gateway:Overview

If your on-premises networks need fast, reliable access to applications deployed outside the Chinese mainland, application acceleration plans use Alibaba Cloud's high-quality bandwidth resources to reduce latency, jitter, and packet loss during data transfer.

How it works

After connecting your on-premises network to Alibaba Cloud through Smart Access Gateway (SAG), you associate an application acceleration plan with your SAG instance. The plan is applied through Alibaba Cloud access points, accelerating access to applications outside the Chinese mainland. You then define acceleration rules to allocate bandwidth for specific applications.

Before you begin

Check that your setup meets these requirements before configuring application acceleration:

  • Direction: Application acceleration plans support only one direction — clients in the Chinese mainland accessing applications in regions outside the Chinese mainland.

  • Instance type: SAG virtual CPE (vCPE) instances do not support application acceleration plans.

  • SAG CPE device version: The SAG device associated with your SAG CPE instance must be version 2.4.0 or later. To upgrade, see Upgrade an SAG device to a later version device to a later version. We recommend that you upgrade your SAG device to the latest version.").

  • SAG app version: The SAG app associated with your SAG app instance must be version 2.4.0 or later. To upgrade, see Install the SAG app app instance and configure instance, you can install to access Alibaba Cloud resources.").

Get started

Step 1: Connect your on-premises network to Alibaba Cloud

This step establishes the network path that the acceleration plan will use. Deploy an SAG device or set up the SAG app:

Step 2: Purchase an application acceleration plan

Buy a plan that covers the bandwidth your workloads need. The plan's total bandwidth sets the upper limit for all downstream configurations. For details, see Work with application acceleration plans, you can use application acceleration plans to quickly and stably access applications that are deployed in regions outside the Chinese mainland.").

Step 3: Associate the plan with your SAG instance

Link the acceleration plan to an SAG instance. Once associated, the bandwidth becomes available to all on-premises networks connected through that instance. Step 4: Add an application acceleration rule

Define a rule to allocate bandwidth for each application to accelerate. Acceleration does not take effect until at least one rule is configured. For details, see Manage an application acceleration rule instance, you must configure an application acceleration rule. An application acceleration rule is used to allocate bandwidth resources for different applications. This topic describes how to add, modify, or delete an application acceleration rule.").

Bandwidth limits

The Maximum Bandwidth parameter controls bandwidth at two levels. Setting limits at both levels lets you prevent any single instance or application from consuming the entire plan's capacity.

To prevent on-premises networks associated with one SAG instance from consuming a large amount of bandwidth resources, the system allows you to throttle bandwidth from different dimensions.
