Honorable Mention, Global AI Hackathon Series with Qwen Cloud

A vaccine sits in a fridge at the end of a long supply chain. Somewhere along the way, a compressor stuttered, a door was left ajar, a pallet baked in the sun for an hour. By the time the vial reaches a community clinic, nobody can tell just by looking whether it will still protect the person it's meant for. ColdGuard is an AI monitor built to answer that single, consequential question before a dose is ever dispensed: is this vaccine safe, or has it degraded?
Vaccines are only as good as their cold chain. Temperature excursions, humidity, and light exposure can silently degrade a dose long before it reaches a patient — and a degraded vaccine doesn't announce itself. It simply fails to protect, which means a community believes it is covered when it isn't.
ColdGuard puts an automated judgment at exactly that decision point. Instead of relying on a paper log or a harried worker's guess, the system watches the storage conditions continuously and produces a clear safe-or-degraded output at the moment it matters most — before the dose reaches a community.
The system uses AI to monitor temperature, humidity, light intensity, and other environmental factors around the vaccine. It then delegates the hard science to a specialized sub-agent that applies chemical formulas and stability standards to compute a degradation level. The division of labor is the design: one layer senses the environment, another reasons about the chemistry, and the result is a plain, actionable verdict on whether the vaccine is still fit to use.
ColdGuard was deployed on Alibaba Cloud Elastic Compute Service (ECS), which gave its agent — ASHA — the environment to run its tools and fetch the data it needs. Qwen AI models power both the inference that turns sensor readings into a judgment and the web-scraping that supplies the chemical standards and reference data behind each degradation calculation. It's a compact example of a broader pattern: a small, focused agent on Alibaba Cloud infrastructure, using Qwen for reasoning, aimed at a problem with real human stakes.
Pius Oblie is a software engineer who enjoys building AI-based solutions and loves a good challenge. ColdGuard is his take on putting trustworthy AI where it can quietly protect public health — one vial at a time.
