DataWorks:Overview

Last Updated:Mar 26, 2026

DataWorks provides the DataAnalysis service for querying, analyzing, and visualizing data entirely online — with no local compute constraints and built-in access controls for sharing results securely.

What you can do with DataAnalysis

With DataAnalysis, you can:

  • Query large datasets using compute engines directly in your browser — no local machine required.

  • Pull data from multiple sources and share analysis results with specific team members.

  • Control who can access or share data without downloading it to an on-premises machine.

Access DataAnalysis

Log on to the DataWorks console. In the top navigation bar, select the desired region. In the left-side navigation pane, choose Data Analysis and Service > DataAnalysis. On the page that appears, click Go to DataAnalysis.

The DataAnalysis homepage has two sections:

  • Shortcuts: Click a card — SQL Query, Spreadsheet, or Upload — to go to the corresponding page and start analyzing data.

  • Recently Edited: View and reopen recently edited files. Filter by file type using the All Files drop-down list. Supported file types are Spreadsheet, Dimension Table, and SQLNotes.

    Note

SQLNotes are supported only in the China (Hangzhou) and China (Shanghai) regions. DataAnalysis is supported only on PCs with Google Chrome 69 or later.

Features

Tool What you can do
SQL Query Write and run standard SQL statements to query MaxCompute data and other data sources you have query permissions on. Add self-managed data sources and compute engines from your workspace as datasets, preview data, and generate SQL statements for data tables. See SQL Query (legacy).
Spreadsheet Create and configure workbooks to explore and analyze data. Import data from data sources or an on-premises machine, perform data profiling, and share workbooks with specific team members. See Create and manage a workbook and Analyze data.
Dimension Table Upload data from an on-premises machine to a MaxCompute table and use it alongside other tables for online analysis. Operations engineers can create, modify, and save MaxCompute tables directly in DataAnalysis — no need to route changes through data analysts and developers. See Create and manage a dimension table.

Permissions

To use DataAnalysis, your account must be assigned the Data Analyst role. Contact a user with the Workspace Administrator role to assign it to your account. See Manage permissions on workspace-level services.

Note

Since June 1, 2022, users who were assigned the visitor role or a custom role — without the Data Analyst role — before June 1, 2022 can no longer access DataAnalysis. Users assigned any other role retain access automatically.

For more information about users, roles, and permissions, see Overview of users, roles, and permissions.
