Simple Application Server:Usage notes

Last Updated:Apr 01, 2026

Simple Application Server is designed for low-traffic workloads that occasionally need a performance burst. Before you deploy, review these notes to understand the product's scope, restrictions, and ICP filing requirements.

When to use Simple Application Server

Simple Application Server works well for:

  • Personal websites and blogs

  • Small web applications

For high-CPU workloads — such as large-scale applications or video encoding — use Elastic Compute Service (ECS) instead.

If your current server can't handle your traffic, upgrade your Simple Application Server to a higher resource plan.

Usage restrictions

Traffic penetration is prohibited. Do not use Simple Application Server for traffic penetration. Violations may cause your server to be stopped, locked, and released.

Public bandwidth is not guaranteed. Public bandwidth represents the maximum rate of inbound or outbound internet data transmission. During peak hours, bandwidth may be throttled and packet loss may occur. Simple Application Server is not suitable for scenarios with strict requirements for internet connection quality. If your application requires consistent, high-quality internet connections, use Elastic Compute Service (ECS) instances with pay-by-bandwidth billing instead.

ICP filing notes

Servers in the Chinese mainland require an ICP filing. Before hosting websites on a Simple Application Server deployed in the Chinese mainland, apply for an ICP filing. For background, see What is an ICP filing?. For the application process, see ICP filing process.

Servers outside the Chinese mainland do not require an ICP filing.

Service identification numbers

When you apply for an ICP filing in the Alibaba Cloud ICP Filing system, you need a service identification number to associate your server with the website. See Apply for service identification numbers for free.

Note the following limits:

  • Minimum subscription duration: The server must be subscribed for at least three months, including any renewal periods. This requirement applies starting May 21, 2018.

  • Service identification numbers per IP: Each public IP address supports up to five service identification numbers, each usable for one ICP filing application. Service identification numbers cannot be reused — they remain consumed even if you deregister the website or remove Alibaba Cloud as your cloud service provider.

  • Domain names per application:

    • If no service identification number has been issued for your entity: submit up to five websites per application, with multiple domain names per website.

    • If a service identification number has already been issued for your entity: submit one domain name per website. You can submit multiple websites across multiple applications. For example, if the ICP Bei # 1200000 - 1 service identification number is associated with multiple domain names and you add one of those domain names to a new application, all other domain names linked to ICP Bei # 1200000 - 1 are automatically approved after the new domain name passes review.

  • Unfiled domain names: If a website is launched using an unfiled domain name, shut it down and apply for an ICP filing.

  • Transferring from another provider: If you obtained a service identification number from another cloud service provider, transfer the ICP filing to Alibaba Cloud. After your application to transfer the ICP filing is approved by the communications administration, you can launch your websites. You must complete the transfer procedure within 30 days. Otherwise, your websites remain inaccessible.
