DataWorks provides Basic Edition that is billed based on the pay-as-you-go billing method and more advanced editions that are billed based on the subscription billing method. After you activate DataWorks, you can use the features and services supported by Basic Edition to run nodes. If you want to use more features, you can upgrade DataWorks from Basic Edition to a more advanced edition and purchase exclusive resource groups, which are billed based on the subscription billing method.
Background information
Pay-as-you-go billing method
After you activate DataWorks, you can use shared resource groups to run nodes. Shared resource groups are billed based on the pay-as-you-go billing method. The following table describes different types of nodes and the shared resource groups that are used by the nodes. The table also provides the links to the topics that describe the shared resource groups and billing details of the resource groups.

NoteIn addition to the resource group service, DataWorks provides other services. Some of the services can be billed only based on the pay-as-you-go billing method. You can select services based on your business requirements. For more information, see Billing overview. This topic describes how to upgrade Basic Edition to a more advanced edition and upgrade a shared resource group to an exclusive resource group.
For information about the features and services that are supported by DataWorks Basic Edition, see Feature comparison.
Upgrade from a pay-as-you-go service to a subscription service
Before the upgrade, pay-as-you-go services are used to run nodes. After the upgrade, subscription services are used to run the nodes. The following sections describe how to upgrade and use a service:
Billing
The billing details of the pay-as-you-go and subscription billing methods vary based on the usage of services. You can view specific expenses in your bill in the Alibaba Cloud Management Console. For more information, see View spending details.
Upgrade from a pay-as-you-go service to a subscription service
By default, some DataWorks services and resource groups that are used to run nodes are billed based on the pay-as-you-go billing method. You can upgrade the pay-as-you-go services to subscription services and purchase subscription resource groups based on the service capabilities and your business requirements. After the upgrade, you can use the subscription services in a more advanced edition. The following table describes the upgrade scenarios for services and different types of nodes, overviews of services and nodes, and billing details of resource groups.
You can purchase a subscription service only after the AliyunBSSOrderAccess and AliyunDataWorksFullAccess policies are attached to the RAM user that you use. For more information, see Manage permissions on the DataWorks services and the entities in the DataWorks console by using RAM policies.
