Changeable items

Item

Description

Instance type

You can change the instance type of all instances.

Storage capacity

You can increase the storage capacity of all instances but cannot decrease it.

Note
  • The new storage capacity cannot exceed the maximum value supported by the instance type. For more information, see Primary instance types.

  • If the current instance type does not offer the storage capacity you need, select a different one.

Note

Changing these configurations does not change the instance's endpoint.

Billing

See Billing rules for configuration changes.

Prerequisites

You have no outstanding renewal orders in your Alibaba Cloud account.

Considerations

During the configuration switchover, your RDS service may experience a transient connection issue that lasts for about 30 seconds. During this period, you cannot perform most database, account, and network operations. We recommend that you perform this operation during off-peak hours or ensure that your application has an automatic reconnection mechanism.

Procedure

  1. Log on to the ApsaraDB RDS console.

  2. In the upper-left corner of the page, select the region where the instance is located.

  3. Find the target instance and click its instance ID.

  4. In the Configuration Information section, click Change Configurations.

  5. (Subscription instances only) In the dialog box that appears, select a change method and click Next. In the Change Configurations dialog box, select Upgrade Now or Downgrade Now based on your needs, and then click Next.

  6. Modify the configurations of the instance. For more information, see Changeable items.

  7. Select when to apply the configuration changes.

    • Switch Immediately After Data Migration: Since a configuration change requires data migration, this option switches to the new instance as soon as the migration is complete.

    • Switch Within Maintenance Window: To minimize disruption, you can schedule the switchover, which causes a transient connection issue, to occur within your specified maintenance window.

      Note

To modify the maintenance window, perform the following steps:

      1. Click Modify.

      2. In the configuration information section, modify the maintenance window and click Save.

      3. Return to the Change Configurations page, refresh it, and restart the configuration change process.

  8. On the Change Configurations page, select the ApsaraDB RDS Terms of Service checkbox, click Confirm, and complete the payment.

FAQ

If I only increase the storage capacity, is data migrated to a new instance?

The system checks if the current host machine has sufficient storage. If it does, the system expands the storage capacity directly without data migration. If not, the system migrates your data to a new host machine with the required capacity.
