Prerequisites
Before you begin, ensure that you have:
An Alibaba Cloud account with no unpaid renewal orders
Change instance specifications
When the new specifications are being applied, a 30-second transient connection may occur and most operations on databases, accounts, and network settings become unavailable. Schedule the change during off-peak hours, or make sure your application is configured to automatically reconnect.
Log in to the ApsaraDB RDS console.
In the top navigation bar, select the region where your RDS instance resides.
Find the target RDS instance and click its instance ID.
In the Configuration Information section, click Change Specifications.
(Subscription instances only) In the dialog box, select a specification change method and click Next.

Select the new instance type or storage capacity.
Storage capacity cannot be decreased. Confirm the target value before proceeding.
Set the Switching Time: To change the maintenance window before proceeding:
Click Modify to the right of the Switch Within Maintenance Window option.
In the Configuration Information section, select a new maintenance window and click Yes.
Return to the Change Specifications page and refresh before continuing.
Option Behavior Execute Immediately Triggers data migration to a new RDS instance. Specifications are applied and workloads are switched over after migration completes. Switch Within Maintenance Window Applies the change during the next maintenance window, reducing business impact from the 30-second transient connection. Read and select Terms of Service, review the configuration summary, and complete the payment.
FAQ
If I only expand storage capacity, does ApsaraDB RDS migrate my data to a new instance?
It depends on the available storage on the host. If the host has enough free storage, no migration is needed and the expansion completes in place. If the host does not have enough storage, ApsaraDB RDS migrates the data to a host with enough capacity.
