ApsaraDB RDS:Change configuration

Last Updated:Mar 28, 2026

When you change the specifications of an ApsaraDB RDS instance, billing adjusts immediately to the new specifications.

Billing by payment type

Pay-as-you-go

Pay-as-you-go instances are billed by the hour. After you change the specifications, billing switches to the new specifications immediately.

Subscription

When you change the specifications of a subscription instance, the system calculates the price difference between the original and new specifications for the remaining subscription duration and either charges or refunds you accordingly.

Discounts and coupons

If you upgrade and then immediately downgrade, the refund may be less than expected in these scenarios:

  • Discount applied during upgrade: Refunds are based on the amount you actually paid. For example, if you received a 15% discount and paid USD 850 for USD 1,000 of service, the downgrade refund is based on USD 850.

  • Coupon applied during upgrade: When downgrading, the refund on the original specs is based on the net amount paid (excluding the coupon value). However, when upgrading, the original-spec fees are calculated at the full unit price, including the portion covered by the coupon.

Change specifications

  1. Go to the Instances page of the ApsaraDB RDS console.

  2. In the top navigation bar, select the region where your instance resides, then click the instance ID.

  3. In the Configuration Information section of the Basic Information page, click Change Specifications.

  4. Select Upgrade or Downgrade and follow the prompts.

Note

In the following scenarios, if you downgrade an instance immediately after an upgrade, the refund you receive may be less than the upgrade cost:

  • The upgrade order included a discount: For example, a 1-year subscription has a 15% discount. If the original price is USD 1,000, you only pay USD 850. The refund for a subsequent downgrade is calculated based on the actual payment of USD 850.

  • If you used a voucher for an upgrade order, any refund for a subsequent downgrade is issued only in cash. The refund is calculated based on the price of the configuration from the original upgrade, which includes the voucher.

Pricing

Prices vary by region, instance type, and storage capacity. See the ApsaraDB RDS buy page for current pricing.
