Billing
Backup and restoration are free. Backup storage is charged based on the size and retention period of backup files. This page covers billing rules for backup storage in PolarDB Enterprise Edition clusters.
Billable items at a glance
| Billable item | Free quota | Charged when |
|---|---|---|
| Level-1 backup storage | 50% of cluster storage usage | Usage exceeds free quota |
| Level-2 backup storage | None | All usage |
| Log backup storage | 100 GB | Usage exceeds 100 GB |
| Cross-region network traffic | None | Cross-region backup is enabled |
Free quota
| Backup type | Free quota |
|---|---|
| Level-1 backup | Cluster storage usage × 50% |
| Level-2 backup | None |
| Log backup | 100 GB |
Free quota with storage compression enabled
If you enable the storage compression feature for your cluster, the free quota for level-1 backups is recalculated as follows:
-
Pay-as-you-go clusters: Free quota = Storage usage before compression × 50%
-
Subscription clusters: Free quota = Max(subscription-billed storage capacity, storage usage before compression) × 50%
Example: A subscription cluster has a subscription-billed storage capacity of 2 TB and an actual storage usage of 1.6 TB. After enabling storage compression, usage compresses to 0.5 TB. The free quota = Max(2 TB, 1.6 TB) × 50% = 1 TB.
For more information, see Enable the storage compression feature.
Billing rules
Level-1 backup
The free quota for level-1 backups is 50% of cluster storage usage. Usage beyond the free quota is charged hourly.
Formula: Storage fee per hour = (Total size of level-1 backups − Free quota) × Unit price per hour
| Storage type | Region in the Chinese mainland | China (Hong Kong) and regions outside China |
|---|---|---|
| PSL5 |
USD 0.0000455 per GB-hour USD 0.0000325 per GB-hour USD 0.000464 per GB-hour |
USD 0.000650 per GB-hour |
| PSL4 |
USD 0.0003 per GB-hour |
USD 0.000433 per GB-hour |
Example: A PolarDB for PostgreSQL cluster in the Chinese mainland uses PSL5 storage. Total level-1 backup size is 700 GB and cluster storage usage is 1,000 GB.USD 0.0659USD 0.02925USD 0.0691USD 0.0325USD 0.032USD 0.0928
The fee is calculated by using the following formula: (1,000 GB - 100 GB) × USD 0.0000325 per GB-hour + 500 MB/1024 × USD 0.075/GB = USD 0.0659
The fee is calculated by using the following formula: (1,000 GB - 100 GB) × USD 0.0000325 per GB-hour = USD 0.02925.
The fee is calculated by using the following formula: 1,000 GB × USD 0.0000325/GB/hour + 500 MB/1024 × USD 0.075/GB = USD 0.0691.
The fee is calculated by using the following formula: 1,000 GB × USD 0.0000325/GB/hour = USD 0.0325.
The backup storage fee is calculated by using the following formula: 1,000 GB × USD 0.000032/GB/hour = USD 0.032/hour.
The fee is calculated by using the following formula: [700 GB - (1,000 GB × 50%)] × USD 0.000464 per GB-hour = USD 0.0928.
Fee = (700 GB − 1,000 GB × 50%) × USD 0.000464 per GB-hour = USD 0.0928 per hour
For information about how to view the size of level-1 backups, see .
Level-2 backup
Level-2 backups can be stored within the same region (intra-region) or replicated across regions (cross-region). Pricing differs by scenario.
Intra-region level-2 backup
Formula: Storage fee per hour = Total size of level-2 backups × Unit price per hour
| Region in the Chinese mainland | China (Hong Kong) and regions outside China |
|---|---|
|
USD 0.0000325 per GB-hour |
USD 0.0000455 per GB-hour |
Example: A cluster in the Chinese mainland has 1,000 GB of level-2 backups.
Fee = 1,000 GB × USD 0.0000325 per GB-hour = USD 0.0325 per hour
Cross-region level-2 backup
Formula: Storage fee per hour = Total size of level-2 backups × Unit price per hour + Cross-region network traffic fee
| Billable item | Region in the Chinese mainland | China (Hong Kong) and regions outside China |
|---|---|---|
| Level-2 backup storage |
USD 0.0000325 per GB-hour |
USD 0.0000455 per GB-hour |
| Cross-region network traffic | See Network traffic fees | |
Example: A cross-region level-2 backup between regions in the Chinese mainland has 1,000 GB of backup data and 500 MB of cross-region network traffic.
Fee = 1,000 GB × USD 0.0000325 per GB-hour + 500 MB ÷ 1,024 × USD 0.075 per GB = USD 0.0691 per hour
Cross-region backup is billed on a daily basis. The example above converts to an hourly rate for comparison. Cross-region backup fees appear in Data Disaster Recovery bills.
Log backup
Log backups include a 100 GB free quota. Usage beyond 100 GB is charged hourly.
Intra-region log backup
Formula: Storage fee per hour = (Total size of log backups − 100 GB) × Unit price per hour
| Region in the Chinese mainland | China (Hong Kong) and regions outside China |
|---|---|
|
USD 0.0000325 per GB-hour |
USD 0.0000455 per GB-hour |
Example: A cluster in the Chinese mainland has 1,000 GB of log backups.
Fee = (1,000 GB − 100 GB) × USD 0.0000325 per GB-hour = USD 0.02925 per hour
Cross-region log backup
Formula: Storage fee per hour = (Total size of log backups − 100 GB) × Unit price per hour + Cross-region network traffic fee
| Billable item | Region in the Chinese mainland | China (Hong Kong) and regions outside China |
|---|---|---|
| Log backup storage |
USD 0.0000325 per GB-hour |
USD 0.0000455 per GB-hour |
| Cross-region network traffic | See Network traffic fees | |
Example: A cross-region log backup between regions in the Chinese mainland has 1,000 GB of log data and 500 MB of cross-region traffic.
Fee = (1,000 GB − 100 GB) × USD 0.0000325 per GB-hour + 500 MB ÷ 1,024 × USD 0.075 per GB = USD 0.0659 per hour
Cross-region backup is billed on a daily basis. The example above converts to an hourly rate for comparison. Cross-region backup fees appear in Data Disaster Recovery bills.
Storage plan offset rules
Purchase storage plans to offset backup storage fees. When plan capacity runs out, excess usage is charged at pay-as-you-go rates.
Level-1 backup offset
| Region | Storage type | Offset ratio | Level-1 backup storage offset by 1 GB of plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Region in the Chinese mainland | PSL4 | 0.41 | 1 ÷ 0.41 = 2.44 GB |
| Region in the Chinese mainland | PSL5 | 0.617 | 1 ÷ 0.617 = 1.62 GB |
| China (Hong Kong) and regions outside China | PSL4 | 0.41 | 1 ÷ 0.41 = 2.44 GB |
| China (Hong Kong) and regions outside China | PSL5 | 0.617 | 1 ÷ 0.617 = 1.62 GB |
Example: A 100 GB storage plan has 50 GB remaining after offsetting PSL5 cluster storage. An additional 50 GB of level-1 backup usage in the Chinese mainland is incurred.
Offset used = 50 GB ÷ 1.6 = 31.25 GB → 18.75 GB remaining in the plan
For more information, see .
Level-2 backup offset
| Region | Offset ratio | Level-2 backup storage offset by 1 GB of plan |
|---|---|---|
| Region in the Chinese mainland | 0.043 | 1 ÷ 0.043 = 23.26 GB |
| China (Hong Kong) and regions outside China | 0.054 | 1 ÷ 0.054 = 18.52 GB |
Example: A 100 GB storage plan has 50 GB remaining. An additional 50 GB of level-2 backup usage in the Chinese mainland is incurred.
Offset used = 50 GB ÷ 23.26 ≈ 2.15 GB → 47.85 GB remaining in the plan
For more information, see .
Log backup offset
| Region | Offset ratio | Log backup storage offset by 1 GB of plan |
|---|---|---|
| Region in the Chinese mainland | 0.043 | 1 ÷ 0.043 = 23.26 GB |
| China (Hong Kong) and regions outside China | 0.054 | 1 ÷ 0.054 = 18.52 GB |
Example: A 100 GB storage plan has 50 GB remaining. An additional 50 GB of log backup usage in the Chinese mainland is incurred.
Offset used = 50 GB ÷ 23.26 ≈ 2.15 GB → 47.85 GB remaining in the plan
For more information, see .
Reduce backup costs
Use the following strategies to lower backup storage fees. Match your approach to your business scenario.
| Strategy | How | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Shorten level-1 backup retention | Reduce from 7 days to 3 days | Backups that exceed the retention period cannot be used for restore |
| Shorten level-2 backup retention | Reduce from 70 days to 30 days | Backups that exceed the retention period cannot be used for restore |
| Shorten log backup retention | Reduce from 7 days to 3 days | Point-in-time restore is unavailable for timestamps outside the retention window |
| Reduce level-1 backup frequency | Reduce from daily to 3 times per week | Increases the time required for point-in-time restore |
| Reduce level-2 backup frequency | Reduce from 3 times to 2 times per week | — |
| Purchase storage plans | Apply plans to offset level-1, level-2, and log backup fees | — |
| Delete unused backup sets | Remove backup sets from the cluster recycle bin to reduce level-2 backup costs | — |
