Securely transfer a domain name from one Alibaba Cloud account to another to centralize management, hand over administrative control, or reassign it to the appropriate business entity.
Common use cases for inter-account transfer:
|
An inter-account transfer changes only the account that manages the domain name. It does not change the registrant (owner) or the expiration date. To change the registrant, see Modify registrant information.
Impacts of an inter-account transfer
DNS resolution: The transfer does not affect DNS resolution.
If you use Alibaba Cloud DNS, DNS records from the free DNS instances are transferred together with the domain name. However, records from paid instances remain in the source account. For more information, see Transfer a domain name between Alibaba Cloud accounts.
SSL certificates: No impact. An SSL certificate is bound to a domain name, and an inter-account transfer does not affect its validity.
To transfer these resources to the same Alibaba Cloud account for centralized management, see Centralized resource management.
Procedure
Step 1: Perform pre-transfer checks
Before you begin, verify that the domain name and accounts meet the following requirements.
Check item | Guidance |
Domain expiration date | The domain name must be active. If it has expired, renew it first. |
Identity verification | ".cn" domain names must have completed identity verification. |
Registration time | A waiting period after registration is required. Typically, more than 7 days for ".cn" domains, and more than 1 day for ".com" and ".net" domains. Refer to the prompts in the console for specific requirements. |

Step 2: Initiate the transfer

Go to the transfer page.
Go to the Domain Names page in the console. Find the target domain name, click Manage in the Actions column, and choose Transfer between Accounts from the left navigation pane.

ImportantAfter transferring a domain name to another account, the destination account gains full administrative control, and this action is irreversible. Before you submit, double-check that the destination account information is correct.
Batch Mode: Enter Domain Names (one per line, up to 1,000) or Upload File (supports .xls and .xlsx formats, up to 2 MB).

After completing the email verification, click Submit. The online transfer takes effect immediately.
Step 3: Check the transfer result
The transfer takes effect immediately. The destination account does not need to accept the transfer.
Source account: After a successful transfer, the domain name is no longer available in the domain name list. You can view the transfer records in Operation Log.
Destination account: Log on to the destination account. The domain name is available on the Domain Names page in the console.
Centralized resource management
To migrate a domain name and its related cloud resources, such as Elastic Compute Service (ECS) instances, Object Storage Service (OSS) buckets, or Content Delivery Network (CDN) configurations, to the destination account for centralized management, refer to the following guides:
DNS resolution: Transfer domain name resolution records between accounts.
SSL certificates: Refer to Upload, sync, and share SSL certificates to share certificates between Alibaba Cloud accounts with the same identity verification information.
ECS instances: To transfer ownership of an ECS instance and its related resources from one Alibaba Cloud account to another, see Migrate ECS instances between accounts.
ImportantResource migration may affect your online business. Assess the potential business impact and create a detailed migration plan before you proceed.
FAQ
Why can't I see my domain name after the transfer?
The domain name is no longer visible in the source account after the transfer. Log on to the destination account and view the Domain Names page in the console.
Confirm that you have completed the inter-account transfer. Note that a change of registrant is not the same as an inter-account transfer. After you change the registrant information, the domain name remains in the current account. You must log on to that account to view it.
How long does an inter-account transfer take? Is there any fee? Does it affect the domain name's expiration date?
Time: The transfer is instantaneous. The domain name immediately appears on the destination account's Domain Names page.
Fee: Transfers between Alibaba Cloud accounts are free of charge.
Expiration date: The expiration date does not change.
Is the identity verification information updated to that of the destination account after the transfer?
No. An inter-account transfer changes only the account that manages the domain. The registrant information remains unchanged. To change the registrant from Person A to Person B or from Company A to Company B, change the registrant after the inter-account transfer is complete.
Is the inter-account transfer reversible? What if I transfer the domain to the wrong account?
The operation is irreversible. Once submitted, the administrative control of the domain name changes immediately. You must confirm the destination account information before you proceed. If you transfer the domain name to the wrong account by mistake, your only option is to contact the account owner and ask them to transfer it back. Alibaba Cloud cannot intervene in such cases.
