Data Management:Switch the DMS deployment region

Overview

DMS deployed in any region can manage database instances worldwide. When a database instance is in a different country from DMS (for example, MySQL in Singapore and DMS in China (Hangzhou)), data generated by DMS operations—such as logs and tickets—is stored in the DMS region.

This constitutes cross-border data transfer. If local laws prohibit such transfers, you must switch DMS to the same region as your database instance.

For example, if a MySQL instance is in Singapore and local laws prohibit cross-border transfer, switch DMS from China (Hangzhou) to Singapore.

When to switch

Switch the DMS deployment region to meet compliance requirements or reduce latency.

• Single-region businesses: switch DMS to your business region for compliance and lower latency.

• Multi-region businesses: select a DMS region based on compliance requirements. If no compliance constraints apply, choose the region that best suits your needs.

Prerequisites

Remove all associated resources from the current region before switching.

• Required cleanup tasks

  • Disable the IP Whitelist

  • Disable the Secure Access Proxy

  • Delete or suspend Task Orchestration flows

  • Delete or disable users in DMS (except for the Tenant Owner and the currently logged-in user)

  • Delete all instances in DMS

• Recommended cleanup tasks

  • Disable the Sensitive Data Protection feature for all instances

  • Close historical data cleanup Tickets

  • Suspend or delete running and pending SQL tasks

  • Export and back up DMS Operation Logs to Alibaba Cloud Log Service

Usage notes

• Available DMS regions: China (Hangzhou), Singapore, Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur), Germany (Frankfurt), Japan (Tokyo), Indonesia (Jakarta), and SAU (Riyadh - Partner Region).

• If no regulations prohibit cross-border data transfer in your database instance's region, DMS and the instance do not need to be in the same region.

• After you switch regions:

  • The Alibaba Cloud account and RAM users can access DMS only in the new region.

  • Access to DMS in the original region is disabled. To restore it, switch regions again.

  • The new region is a clean environment. You must add instances, add users, set security rules, and manage access control permissions again.

• DMS subscriptions from the original region remain active after the switch.

Procedure

1. Log in to DMS 5.0.

2. Go to the region switching page.

   • Simplified mode console:

     Hover over the profile icon in the upper-right corner, select Help and Compliance from the menu, and then click Switch in the Data Processing Region section.

   • Standard mode console:

     In the top menu bar, click the icon, and then click Switch in the Data Processing Region section.

3. In the Switch Data Processing Region dialog box, select a New Region and click Precheck.

4. After the precheck succeeds, click Switch Now.

   The switch takes approximately 30 minutes.

5. After the switch is complete, refresh the DMS page.

FAQ

• Q: Can I switch the DMS deployment region by changing the DMS tenant?

  A: No. Switching tenants does not change the DMS deployment region.

• Q: Does the default DMS deployment region automatically match the region of my Alibaba Cloud account?

  A: No. The DMS deployment region is independent of your Alibaba Cloud account region.
