GoShield: AI-Powered Passenger Safety Built for the Realities of Everyday Rides

This article introduces GoShield, an AI-driven system that monitors ride-hailing trips in real time to detect harassment and protect passengers.

In cities like Jakarta, getting from A to B should be simple. But for many, especially women and young passengers, the experience is often filled with anxiety. The data is clear—over 68% of public transit users have experienced harassment, and a staggering 74% of those affected are women.

It’s not just a statistic. It’s a daily reality. And it’s what inspired Team GR-AI to build GoShield—an AI-powered safety intelligence system designed to protect passengers in real time.

Safety, Reimagined for Ride-Hailing

GoShield is more than a panic button. It’s a proactive, intelligent layer of protection that listens, understands, and responds—in real time.

Once activated by the passenger at the start of a ride, GoShield quietly monitors voice interactions, using large language models (LLMs) to detect signs of discomfort, threat, or harassment. If the system senses a potential risk, it alerts the passenger, triggers protective actions, and compiles a full evidence kit: transcripts, audio, and a summary—all ready to be reported.

This is what it means to ride safer, backed by AI.

Meet the Team Behind GoShield

Team GR-AI is a group of undergraduate students from Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), combining expertise in data science, product management, and full-stack engineering. Their backgrounds in information systems, tech, and user design reflect clearly in the solution they’ve built.

How GoShield Works

Here’s what happens when GoShield is activated during a ride:

  1. One-tap activation – Passengers turn on Safety Mode at ride start
  2. Real-time monitoring – AI listens to voice interactions to detect risk
  3. Threat response – Passengers are alerted, and actions are triggered
  4. Evidence generation – Transcripts, audio clips, and summaries are compiled
  5. Easy reporting – All data is packaged for secure sharing with contacts or authorities

It’s privacy-conscious, passenger-centric, and designed to give users back a sense of control.
