In conjunction of the 3rd anniversary of Alibaba Cloud's partnership with Elastic, Jia Yang Qing, Vice President of Alibaba and Head of Alibaba Cloud Intelligent Computing Platform Division, and Shay Banon, Founder and CEO of Elastic, reviewed their three-year cooperation and discussed in-depth on the trends of cloud native technology and application scenarios.

A Fruitful Partnership between Elastic and Alibaba Cloud

Shay Banon was pleased of the progress of the partnership in the past three years, and mentioned that it has led to the successful and widespread adoption of Elasticsearch in the China market as well as the global market.

Echoing Shay's sentiments, Jia Yang Qing was impressed with the rapid growth of the partnership in the last three years. In particular, Yang Qing pointed out that Alibaba Cloud Elasticsearch supports more than 10 PBs of data, which is equivalent to the storage capacity of the 20 largest libraries in the world (that is, the Library of Congress). He also stated that in a survey conducted with over a thousand of Alibaba Cloud users, the data shows that more than 50% of Alibaba Cloud users are using Elasticsearch. What's more, he noted that the adoption of Elasticsearch is not limited to just internet companies, but also applies to customers from more "traditional industries" such as retail, logistics, and manufacturing.

The Benefits of Integrating Cloud Native with Open Source

Shay mentioned that the team at Elastic seamlessly integrated Elasticsearch into the cloud-native technology foundation, and provided a first-class experience for Elasticsearch users by providing access to a full set of Elastic Stack functions and collaboration support. He also added that the Alibaba Cloud Elasticsearch product allows users to get the full experience of Elasticsearch, including deployment and scaling, all through a single click.

From the perspective of the cloud, Yang Qing mentioned that the biggest benefit of the cloud is that teams no longer need to rapidly scale their IT team in order to ramp up their infrastructure. This is because cloud native technology enables businesses to easily and quickly pull up several machines and services. He also added that open source, when applied to cloud native, helps make life easier for developers as they can build and combine systems in a componentized way.

Open Source an Effective Way to Create Quality Products

As the head of Alibaba's Open Source Committee, Yang Qing said that Alibaba Cloud fully respects users and forms a standard, open, and public technology system based on their original usage habits. Currently, the number of Alibaba Group's open source projects has exceeded thousands. More than 700,000 developers around the world light up GitHub Star for Alibaba, and thousands of fans have participated in project contributions. Therefore, Alibaba is also actively giving back to the open source community, such as feeding back the business needs of Alibaba Cloud or other large-scale systems to the community, and jointly building new solutions.

Elastic, as a technology company advocating openness and free use, has created a unique business model. Free and openness is not only an effective way to distribute software, but also an effective way to create high-quality products. Its scalability increases as users try new use cases and build integrations, plug-ins and frameworks that extend the scope of the project, and continue to create value for developers and corporate users. Shay emphasized that openness and freedom are the driving force behind Elastic's continued success.

Data Intelligence + Open Ecology: Accelerating Digital Transformation of Enterprises

As an increasing number of products and services are going digital, more data are being generated online which in turn makes more information searchable. In this context, we need to focus on providing a better experience for developers and customers while ensuring data security. In the context of global digital transformation, it is not enough for an enterprise to have only IT infrastructure, and enterprise applications will also be driven from process to data intelligence. However, most enterprises' databases, IoT systems, etc. are still set up in the most basic way, so only data intelligence can help generate greater business value.

In addition, the realization of business value requires the undertaking of business scenarios. A good example is Elastic and Alibaba Cloud. With the help of Alibaba Cloud, Elastic has broadened the use boundary of its own technology and presented more and more business application scenarios.
