What Is the Difference Between Database and Data Warehouse

This article describes the difference between Database and Data Warehouse.

Database Definition

Database is a logical concept. It is a warehouse used to store data through database software. The database is composed of many tables. The tables are two-dimensional, and there can be many fields in one table. The fields are lined up, and the corresponding data is written into the table line by line. The database tables are capable of expressing multi-dimensional relationships in two dimensions. Currently, the popular databases on the market are two-dimensional databases. Such as Oracle, DB2, MySQL, Sybase, MS SQL Server, etc.

Data Warehouse Definition

The data warehouse is an upgrade of the database concept. From a logical understanding, there is no difference between a database and a data warehouse. They are all places where data is stored through database software, but in terms of data volume, data warehouses are much larger than databases. The data warehouse is mainly used for data mining and data analysis to assist leaders in making decisions.

Data Warehouse Feature

  • Data warehouse is subject-oriented
So what is a subject? Simply put, a subject is what users care about when using a data warehouse.
  • Data warehouse does not support modification
Unlike a database, a data warehouse does not support update and delete operations.
  • The data in the data warehouse changes over time
This is not in conflict with the previous one. This change does not refer to changes made by update or delete, but changes over time, continuously adding new content, or deleting old content.
  • Data warehouse is integrated by multiple heterogeneous data sources
  • The data warehouse generally stores historical data
  • The data warehouse is a weak transaction because the data warehouse inventory is historical data, generally read (analyze) data scenarios.

The Difference Between Database and Data Warehouse

  • The database is designed to capture data, and the data warehouse is designed to analyze data.
  • The database is a transaction-oriented design, and the data warehouse is a subject-oriented design.
  • The database generally stores business data, and the data warehouse generally stores historical data.
  • The database design is to avoid redundancy as much as possible. It is generally designed for a certain business application. For example, a simple User table can record simple data such as user names and passwords. It meets business applications but does not meet analysis. The design of the data warehouse deliberately introduces redundancy. According to the analysis requirements, the analysis dimensions and analysis indicators are designed.

A data warehouse is theme-oriented, integrated, stable, and time-varying. It is used to support management decision-making. A data warehouse collects all of the enterprise data and provides a centralized and standard data outlet for all enterprise departments.

A data warehouse (model) is a methodology of best practices for manual data collection, storage, understanding, organization, management, and decision-making. The model is not affected by where it is used or what technology it uses. However, the logical model and the physical model are integrated closely into the final solution. Therefore, we need the business and technical capabilities provided by data warehouses.
