What Is Static and Dynamic IP

This article describes what is Static and Dynamic IP, and the functions

What is Static IP

A static IP address (also known as a fixed IP address) is an IP address assigned to a computer or network device for a long time. Generally speaking, it is a special server or a computer that uses a dedicated line to access the Internet to have a fixed IP address, and the cost is more expensive. Static IP is required for secondary routing.

A static IP is an IP segment that can be used to access the Internet directly. This IP will be assigned an IP address for you when the ISP is installed. It makes the computer no longer automatically obtain the network address when connecting to the network, avoiding the trouble of network connection. Broadband operators will provide users with an IP address, subnet mask, gateway and DNS server address. Without using a router, you only need to connect the home network cable to the computer and manually set the IP address on the computer so that the computer can access the Internet.

The static IP address will not change and is mainly used for website applications or services on the Internet. Some gamers and people who use VOIP tend to choose static IP addresses because communication is easier.

What is Dynamic IP

Dynamic IP addresses are relative to static IP addresses. First of all, in order to save IP resources, computers connected to the Internet via telephone dial-up, ADSL virtual dial-up, etc. are not assigned a fixed IP address. Instead, it is dynamically and temporarily allocated by the ISP to improve the utilization of IP addresses. Secondly, in the local area network, for the convenience of client setup, dynamic allocation of IP addresses is often used, which means that the IP address you get is different every time you connect to the Internet. Although this does not affect your access to the Internet, your friends and users cannot access you. Because they don't know where your computer is. It’s like everyone has a phone, but your phone number changes every day.

The IP Address Function

There are millions of computers on the Internet. In order to distinguish these computers, people assign a special address to each computer, called an IP address, which is an address format used to identify computers or users on the Internet. Use the TCP/IP protocol to assign IP addresses to hosts or servers connected to the Internet, which can determine each computer connected to the Internet Each host can be accessed through the IP address. The IP address consists of 4 numbers.
Each part of the number corresponds to an 8-bit binary number, and each part is separated by a decimal point. For example, the IP address of a certain host is 211.15.265.112, and the NIC (Internet Network Information Center) is responsible for the global address planning and management of the Internet IP address.
At the same time, the three major network information centers, Inter NIC, APNIC, and RIPE, are specifically responsible for the allocation of IP addresses in the United States and other regions.

Dynamic IP needs to automatically obtain an IP address when connecting to the network for users to access the Internet normally. The static IP is the IP address assigned to the user by the ISP when it is installed. It can be directly connected to the Internet without obtaining an IP address. Computers that access the Internet via Modem, ISDN, ADSL, cable broadband, community broadband, etc., are assigned different IP addresses each time they access the Internet. This is a temporary IP address dynamically allocated by the ISP, which is a dynamic IP address. Because IP address resources are precious, most users access the Internet through dynamic IP addresses.

Cloud migration is the main driver for the digital transformation of enterprises, but traditional enterprises are usually confronted with several challenges during cloud migration. First of all, cloud migration may change the public IP addresses of enterprises. Public IP addresses are an important IT asset for enterprises. The change of public IP addresses may lead to unexpected costs during cloud migration and digital transformation. The IP addresses of enterprises must stay unchanged in certain scenarios. For example, when the business uses an IP address whitelist to ensure security, the system architecture is deployed in IP-based environments. In normal cases, regulatory compliance also requires unchanged IP addresses. Due to the high latency and poor elasticity of single-line networks used by traditional enterprises, network scaling takes a long time, and enterprises are unable to respond to market demands quickly. In addition, the security protection that enterprises develop is weak and lacks high-level, anti-distributed denial of service (anti-DDoS) protection. If attacked, all network lines will become unavailable, causing huge losses.

EIPs are independent public IP address resources, which allow you to decouple public IP addresses from ECS instances and facilitate management.
An EIP is a NAT IP address that is located in the Internet gateway of Alibaba Cloud and mapped to the associated cloud resource through NAT. After a cloud resource is associated with an EIP, the cloud resource can communicate with the Internet through the EIP.
