Content Delivery Network – Part 4: Dynamic Route for CDN

Part 4 of this article series compares the Content Delivery Network (CDN) and Dynamic Content Delivery Network (DCDN).

By Shantanu Kaushik

Today, the IT sphere is expanding rapidly with a notable increase in social media implementations, e-commerce websites, and the Internet of Everything (IoE). The era of dynamic content is on the rise, and the days of static websites serving limited information are long gone. Today, content delivery networks (CDNs) accommodate a substantial feature-set to work with state-of-the-art machine learning and AI solutions to generate a more personalized web experience for the user.

There is a rapid increase in the total content served to end users generated in real-time. There is absolutely no room for sluggish websites. Users will switch to another website if those scenarios occur. Users expect a fast, reliable, and personalized web experience that is not dependent on their screen size, browser, location, computing system, or network.

Dynamic Content Delivery Network (DCDN)

Alibaba Cloud Content Delivery Network (CDN) caches files to an edge node that is closer to end users to speed up static file delivery. However, storing content to CDN nodes is impractical or impossible with dynamic web applications since the server generates the content in response to user behavior.

Applications may also contain personalized and dynamically changing content. This type of content cannot be cached using a CDN since the content changes continuously and could present a scenario where content synchronization is impossible.

Speeding up dynamic content delivery presents a complex scenario when compared to static content caching. Here, you need an end-to-end solution to enable a dynamic route for content delivery. Alibaba Cloud Dynamic Route for CDN (DCDN) is the answer.

What Is DCDN?

Alibaba Cloud Dynamic Route for Content Delivery Network (DCDN) can accelerate static and dynamic content. This content can be generated via a website or application. With Alibaba Cloud DCDN, you can overcome various issues:

  • High latency during transmission
  • Packet loss during transmission
  • Unoptimized Transmission Route
  • Service Interruptions

There could be several factors for the issues mentioned above, including:

  • An Unstable Network
  • Unprecedented Traffic Spikes
  • Network Congestions

You can use Alibaba Cloud DCDN to improve the overall performance of your website and accelerate your content delivery for a better user experience. You can use Alibaba Cloud DCDN even if your website features static and dynamic content or is hosted on a distributed network.

CDN and DCDN Comparison

2

How Does It Work?

Alibaba Cloud DCDN uses smart routing to differentiate between the requested content. This enables the system to deliver the accelerated content efficiently irrespective of its content. It is based on an intelligent algorithm that helps differentiate dynamic and static content.

Static content delivery is accelerated using the Alibaba Cloud CDN, and the dynamic content can be retrieved from origins through dynamic acceleration technologies. These technologies include:

  • Smart Routing
  • Protocol Optimization
  • Connection Optimization or Link Multiplexing
  • Packet Parameter Optimization

In a Nutshell

Alibaba Cloud DCDN accelerates dynamic and static content delivery separately. Real-time detection and smooth cross-network data transmission handle traffic surges stably and efficiently. Server Load Balancer balances multiple origins, link multiplexing, and ordered back-to-origin requests.

Alibaba Cloud DCDN uses end-to-end HTTPS secure acceleration, hotlink protection, and IP-based throttling for security. Alibaba Cloud DCDN offers rule customization, monitoring, and an alert service for dynamic and static content. You can:

  • Set Acceleration Rules
  • Set Caching Rules
  • Set Monitoring Rules for Data
  • Configure Alert Services

Smart Routing

Smart Routing optimization takes care of the dynamic nature of the Internet and its connectivity. Random traffic surges and connectivity outages can cause content unavailability to users. Alibaba Cloud has smart protocols and solutions, such as Cloud Enterprise Network (CEN) and Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), to help with the intelligent routing of Internet content.

Route optimization detects the optimal path for the data to travel between the origin and user. This enables higher availability scenarios and ensures the dynamic content is delivered to end users using the fastest route seamlessly.

Alibaba Cloud DCDN analyzes the real-time network data and uses smart routing to compare it with different network paths. This data is recorded within the system every time a transaction happens and is used as a reference for future path optimizations.

The data is recorded throughout the delivery process with different CDN nodes within the Alibaba Cloud DCDN delivery chain. This helps the DCDN determine the fastest route between the origin and helps the CDN node establish the shortest route.

  • Alibaba Cloud Dynamic Route for CDN determines the best gateways to route data from the client to the origin using logic that focuses on the network and other components to maximize stability. This enables faster and more reliable dynamic content delivery to end users.
