Domain Names:Update lock

Last Updated:Jun 10, 2026

An update lock prevents unauthorized changes to your domain name's registration information, protecting it from tampering caused by account compromise or operational errors.

The update lock prevents the following registration information from being modified through the console or API:

  • Registrant information

  • Administrator, buyer, or technical contact information

  • DNS servers

The lock sets the clientUpdateProhibited status code for your domain in WHOIS lookups.

The update lock protects only registration information. It does not affect DNS record management (A, CNAME, and other records) in the Alibaba Cloud DNS console.

Enable or disable the update lock

You can enable or disable the lock at any time. Disable the lock before modifying protected information, such as changing registrant information or modifying DNS servers. Re-enable the lock immediately after you finish.

  1. Log on to the Alibaba Cloud Domain Names console .

  2. On the Domain Names page, find your domain name and click Manage in the Actions column.

  3. In the left-side navigation pane, click Security Settings.

  4. In the Update Lock section, click Enable or Disable in the Actions column.

  5. In the Confirm the Operation dialog box, complete the security verification.

    1. Click Send Verification Code to receive a verification code by email.

    2. Enter the verification code and click Confirm.

FAQ

How do I modify the domain name's information if the update lock is enabled?

Disable the lock, modify the registration information, then re-enable the lock.

Is the update lock still valid after a domain name expires?

No. The lock applies only to active domains. When a domain expires, the lock is automatically removed. After you renew or redeem the domain, manually re-enable the lock.
