This topic answers frequently asked questions about E-MapReduce (EMR) cluster billing.
Do EMR clusters support auto-renewal?
Yes. Both the EMR service and its underlying Elastic Compute Service (ECS) instances support auto-renewal. For details, see Renewal policy.
How do I view the expiration time of an EMR cluster and the expiration time of the ECS instances in the cluster?
To view the EMR cluster expiration time, go to the EMR on ECS page, click the cluster name, and then check the Cluster Information section on the Basic Information tab. The EMR instance expiration time equals the cluster expiration time.
To view the expiration time of the ECS instances, go to the EMR on ECS page, click the
icon in the Actions column for the cluster, and select Renew. On the Renewal Management page, click Custom Renewal in the upper-right corner to see ECS instance expiration times.
Does EMR have a mechanism to notify users of upcoming expiration of EMR clusters or ECS instances within the clusters?
EMR sends an expiration notification 3 days before the expiration date. To view these notifications, go to the EMR console, click Events in the left-side navigation pane, and then click the Expense Events3 days tab. To receive notifications automatically, subscribe to EMR Expense events in the CloudMonitor console.
If an EMR cluster expires but the ECS instances in the cluster do not expire, am I charged for the ECS instances? What do I do if I am charged for the ECS instances?
If an EMR cluster expires but its ECS instances have not, the cluster becomes unavailable—but the nodes continue to be billed. This typically happens after a scale-out when the EMR instance and ECS instances end up with different expiration times.
To prevent expiration mismatches after scaling out, align the expiration times as soon as possible:
-
On the EMR on ECS page, click the
icon in the Actions column for the cluster, and select Renew. -
On the Renewal Management page, click Custom Renewal in the upper-right corner.
-
Set the same expiration time for both the EMR instance and the ECS instances.
For details, see Renewal policy.
If the EMR instance has already expired but the ECS instances have not, renew the EMR instance separately: on the EMR on ECS page, click the
icon, select Renew, and then click Custom Renewal on the Renewal Management page to renew the EMR instance on its own.
If auto-renewal is already enabled for the ECS instances, enable it for the EMR instance as well: on the EMR on ECS page, click the
icon, select Auto-renewal, and then click Custom Auto-renewal Rule in the upper-right corner.
Can I change the billing method of EMR clusters?
Only changes from pay-as-you-go to subscription are supported. Switching in the other direction is not available. For details, see Switch from pay-as-you-go to subscription.
Am I charged for an EMR cluster if I confirm the order for the EMR cluster but do not complete the payment?
It depends on the billing method:
-
Pay-as-you-go clusters: ECS charges apply only if ECS instances are created. EMR charges apply only after the cluster is successfully created.
-
Subscription clusters: No charges are generated if you do not complete the payment.
How am I charged for an EMR cluster?
EMR supports subscription and pay-as-you-go billing methods. For EMR on ECS, the total cost consists of two parts: EMR service fees and ECS instance fees. EMR service fees vary based on the ECS instance types in the cluster. For a full breakdown, see Billing.
How do I enable auto-renewal for EMR clusters?
Auto-renewal is available only for subscription clusters. For setup instructions, see Renewal policy.
I want to manually renew an EMR cluster for four years, but this duration is not available in the options. What do I do?
Manual renewal supports a maximum of 2 years per renewal. To renew for 4 years, renew the cluster twice—once for 2 years, then again for another 2 years after the first renewal completes. For details, see Manually renew a cluster.
