This topic provides answers to some frequently asked questions about the billing of E-MapReduce (EMR) clusters.
Do EMR clusters support auto-renewal?
Yes, EMR clusters support auto-renewal. The EMR service and Elastic Compute Service (ECS) instances can be automatically renewed. For more information, see Renewal policy.
How do I view the expiration time of an EMR cluster and the expiration time of the ECS instances in the cluster?
You can view the expiration time of an EMR cluster in the EMR console. On the EMR on ECS page, find the desired cluster and click the name of the cluster. In the Cluster Information section of the Basic Information tab, view the expiration time of the EMR cluster.
The expiration time of the EMR instance is the same as the expiration time of the EMR cluster. To view the expiration time of ECS instances, perform the following steps: On the EMR on ECS page, find the desired cluster, move the pointer over the icon in the Actions column, and then select Renew. In the upper-right corner of the Renewal Management page, click Custom Renewal. Then, you can view the expiration time of ECS instances.
Does EMR have a mechanism to notify users of upcoming expiration of EMR clusters or ECS instances within the clusters?
To view the expiration notifications of EMR clusters or ECS instances within the clusters, perform the following operations: Log on to the EMR console and click Events in the left-side navigation pane. On the page that appears, click the Expense Events tab to view the expiration notifications. You can also subscribe to the EMR Expense event in the CloudMonitor console to receive notifications. The system will send you an expiration notification three days before the expiration time.
If an EMR cluster expires but the ECS instances in the cluster do not expire, am I charged for the ECS instances? What do I do if I am charged for the ECS instances?
If an EMR cluster expires but the ECS instances in the cluster do not expire, the cluster becomes unavailable but the nodes of the cluster continue to be billed.
In most cases, this issue occurs because the expiration time of the EMR instance is inconsistent with the expiration time of the ECS instances after you scale out the cluster. To prevent this issue, perform the following steps at the earliest opportunity after you scale out your cluster: On the EMR on ECS page, find the desired EMR cluster, move the pointer over the icon in the Actions column, and then select Renew. In the upper-right corner of the Renewal Management page, click Custom Renewal. On the Renewal Management page, specify the same expiration time for the EMR instance and ECS instances. For information about how to renew a cluster, see Renewal policy.
If the EMR instance expires but the ECS instances do not expire, perform the following steps to renew the EMR instance at the earliest opportunity: On the EMR on ECS page, find the desired EMR cluster, move the pointer over the icon in the Actions column, and then select Renew. In the upper-right corner of the Renewal Management page, click Custom Renewal. Then, renew the EMR instance separately.
If auto-renewal is enabled for the ECS instances of an EMR cluster, perform the following steps to enable auto-renewal for the EMR instance: On the EMR on ECS page, find the desired EMR cluster, move the pointer over the icon in the Actions column, and then select Auto-renewal. In the upper-right corner of the Auto-renewal page, click Custom Auto-renewal Rule. Then, enable auto-renewal for the EMR instance.
Can I change the billing method of EMR clusters?
You can change the billing method of EMR clusters only from pay-as-you-go to subscription. For more information, see Switch from pay-as-you-go to subscription.
Am I charged for an EMR cluster if I confirm the order for the EMR cluster but do not complete the payment?
Pay-as-you-go clusters: After you submit a request to create a cluster, ECS charges are generated only if ECS instances are created. EMR charges are generated only after the cluster is successfully created.
Subscription clusters: If you do not complete the payment, no charges are generated.
How am I charged for an EMR cluster?
EMR supports the subscription and pay-as-you-go billing methods. For the EMR on ECS service, the fees for an EMR cluster consist of EMR service fees and ECS instance fees. The EMR service fees vary based on the type of the ECS instances of the EMR cluster. For more information, see Billing.
How do I enable auto-renewal for EMR clusters?
You can enable auto-renewal only for subscription EMR clusters. For more information, see Renewal policy.
I want to manually renew an EMR cluster for four years, but this duration is not available in the options. What do I do?
You can renew the cluster for two years first. After you renew the cluster, you can renew it again for another two years. For more information, see Manually renew a cluster.
