Subscription E-MapReduce (EMR) clusters must be renewed before they expire to avoid data loss. Pay-as-you-go clusters do not need renewal — keep enough balance in your account to cover ongoing fees.
This topic covers manual renewal, enabling and disabling auto-renewal, and refreshing the expiration time after renewal.
What happens if a cluster expires
If a subscription cluster expires and is not renewed within 15 days, the Elastic Compute Service (ECS) instances in the cluster and all data stored in those instances are permanently deleted on the 15th day.
Renew before expiration or enable auto-renewal to let the system handle it automatically.
Manually renew a cluster
Prerequisites
Before you begin, make sure that:
-
The cluster is in the Running state
-
Your account has no unpaid orders
Renewal rules
-
Clusters eligible for manual renewal: Running and not yet expired, or expired but not yet released.
-
If ECS instances in the cluster expire and are not renewed within 15 days, the instances and their data are deleted on the 15th day.
-
The system starts deducting fees for auto-renewal three days before the service expires. Ensure that your account has a sufficient balance.
-
The cluster is renewed for the duration you specify. For example, selecting three months extends the expiration date by three months.
Renew a cluster
-
Log on to the EMR console. In the left-side navigation pane, click EMR on ECS.
-
In the top navigation bar, select a region and resource group.
-
Find the cluster, move the pointer over the icon in the Actions column, and then select Renew.
-
On the Renewal Management page, configure renewal policies for the ECS instances and the EMR instance. Two renewal methods are supported:
-
Quick renewal (recommended) Select a renewal period from the Renewal Setting drop-down list. This applies a unified policy to all ECS instances and the EMR instance in the cluster.

-
Custom renewal
ImportantUse a unified renewal policy for all instances to prevent nodes from being released due to inconsistent expiration times.
Click Custom Renewal in the upper-right corner. Select a renewal period from the Renewal Setting drop-down list separately for each ECS instance and for the EMR instance.

Parameter
Description
Instance ID
The cluster or instance ID. In the EMR Instance section, this shows the EMR cluster ID. In the ECS Instances section, this shows the IDs of the ECS instances.
Cluster
The name of the cluster.
Node Name
The name of the node.
Node Group
The name of the node group to which the ECS instance belongs.
Expiration Time
The time when the EMR instance or ECS instance expires.
Renewal Setting
Select a renewal period from the drop-down list.
-
-
Read the terms of service and click Submit Order. After you click Submit Order, an order confirmation message appears. Click Pay for Order to open the Purchase page, which shows the total amount and order details.
ImportantIf an unpaid order exists in the cluster list, scale-out and renewal operations are not allowed.
-
Complete the payment. After payment, the expiration time on the Basic Information tab is updated within one hour. To view the updated time immediately, see Refresh the expiration time.
Enable auto-renewal
When auto-renewal is enabled, the system automatically renews the cluster before it expires. No manual action is needed — keep enough balance in your account to cover the renewal fees.
Prerequisites
Before you begin, make sure that:
-
The cluster is in the Running state
-
Auto-renewal is enabled at least two days before the cluster expires. The configuration takes effect the next day.
-
Your account has sufficient balance, including cash, vouchers, and coupons, to cover the renewal fees
If a cluster expires the next day, manually renew it instead of enabling auto-renewal.
Auto-renewal rules
-
The system deducts the renewal fees three days before the cluster expires.
-
The cluster is renewed for the duration you specified when enabling auto-renewal.
Enable auto-renewal for a cluster
-
Log on to the EMR console. In the left-side navigation pane, click EMR on ECS.
-
Find the cluster, move the pointer over the icon in the Actions column, and then select Auto-renewal.
-
On the Auto-renewal page, configure auto-renewal policies for the ECS instances and the EMR instance. Two auto-renewal methods are supported:
-
Quick auto-renewal (recommended) Select a renewal period from the Configure Auto Renewal Rule drop-down list. This applies a unified policy to all ECS instances and the EMR instance in the cluster.
-
Custom auto-renewal > Important: Use a unified renewal policy for all instances to prevent nodes from being released due to inconsistent expiration times. Click Custom Auto-renewal Rule in the upper-right corner. In the ECS Instances section, select an auto-renewal period for each ECS instance. In the Configure Auto Renewal Rule section, select an auto-renewal period for the EMR instance.
-
-
Click OK.
Disable auto-renewal
The system deducts renewal fees 3 days before the cluster expires. To stop auto-renewal from applying in the next billing cycle, disable it before that deduction occurs.
-
Log on to the EMR console. In the left-side navigation pane, click EMR on ECS.
-
Find the cluster, move the pointer over the icon in the Actions column, and then select Auto-renewal.
-
On the Auto-renewal page, disable auto-renewal for the ECS instances and the EMR instance.
-
To disable auto-renewal for all instances in the cluster, select Auto-renewal Disabled from the Configure Auto Renewal Rule drop-down list.
-
To disable auto-renewal for specific ECS instances or the EMR instance, click Custom Auto-renewal Rule in the upper-right corner. Then, for each target instance in the ECS Instances section or for the EMR instance in the EMR Instance section, select Auto-renewal Disabled from the Configure Auto Renewal Rule drop-down list.
-
-
Click OK.
Refresh the expiration time
After manual or auto-renewal, the expiration time may take up to one hour to update. To view the latest expiration time immediately, use one of the following methods:
-
On the Renewal Management page, click Refresh Expiration Time in the upper-right corner.
-
On the Auto-renewal page, click Refresh Expiration Time in the upper-right corner.
-
On the Basic Information tab, click the
icon to the right of Expiration Time.
