Data Management:Disable or enable database instances

Last Updated:Mar 28, 2026

As a DMS administrator or database administrator (DBA), disable a database instance to block other users from querying or modifying it in Data Management (DMS). Disabled instances are removed from the left-side instance list on the homepage of the DMS console and cannot be searched for in the DMS console, but continue running in other Alibaba Cloud services. Re-enable an instance at any time to restore access.

Disabling an instance does not release its control mode quota. To release the quota, remove the instance entirely. See Remove one or more instances.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, ensure that you have:

Disable a database instance

  1. Log on to the DMS console V5.0.

  2. Move the pointer over the DMS icon icon in the upper-left corner and choose All Features > Data Assets > Instances.

In normal mode, choose Data Assets > Instances in the top navigation bar.
  3. On the Instance List tab, find the instance you want to disable.

  4. In the Actions column, choose More > Forbidden instance.

  5. In the confirmation dialog, click Confirm.

View why a database instance is disabled

  1. On the Instance List tab, select Disabled from the Status drop-down list.

  2. Find the database instance.

  3. Move the pointer over Disable in the Status column to see the reason.

A database instance may be disabled because the purchased control mode or sensitive data protection feature expires. For example, if a database instance is disabled due to insufficient quota for the Security Collaboration mode, you can purchase the Security Collaboration mode to increase the quota or change the control mode to Flexible Management before re-enabling it.

Enable a database instance

Before enabling, address the reason the instance was disabled. For example, if the instance was disabled due to insufficient quota for the Security Collaboration mode, you can purchase the Security Collaboration mode to increase the quota or change the control mode of the database instance to Flexible Management.

  1. On the Instance List tab, select Disabled from the Status drop-down list.

  2. Find the instance you want to enable.

  3. In the Actions column, choose More > Enable instance.

  4. In the confirmation dialog, click Confirm.
