Before you can back up an SAP HANA database, register its instance in the Cloud Backup console. Registration automatically installs the backup client on the host ECS instance.
Prerequisites
The Alibaba Cloud Cloud Backup service is activated. Activating Cloud Backup is free of charge. The following fees are incurred when you use the SAP HANA backup feature of Cloud Backup:
SAP HANA backup software usage fee: Charged per SAP HANA instance (standalone or primary/secondary).
Storage capacity fee: Charged based on post-deduplication and post-compression data volume.
Alibaba Cloud Assistant is installed on the ECS instance that hosts the SAP HANA database.
The ECS backup client requires Cloud Assistant.
ECS instances purchased before December 1, 2017 require manual installation. Install the Cloud Assistant client.
ECS instances purchased on or after December 1, 2017 have Cloud Assistant pre-installed.
You have the SYSTEM username and password for the SAP HANA instance.
Usage notes
Only one SAP HANA instance can be registered per ECS instance. Registering a second instance on the same host causes a "Failed to install HANA" error.
Direct backup is supported only for SAP HANA instances on Alibaba Cloud ECS. For on-premises databases, perform a local backup first, then use Cloud Backup to back up the database files. For more information, see Back up local files.
Backint supports MDCs in SAP HANA 1.0 SPS 09 (Revision 94) or later and SAP HANA 2.0 SPS 01 or later. Single-container systems in SAP HANA 1.0 are not supported.
Procedure
Log on to the Cloud Backup console.
In the navigation pane on the left, choose .
In the top navigation bar, select a region.
On the SAP HANA Instance tab, click Register HANA Instance.
In the Register HANA Instance panel, configure the connection information for the SAP HANA instance and install the client.
Configure the connection information and click Next.

Backup Vault
Select or create a backup vault for storing backups.
Create Vault: Specify a vault name. If left empty, a random name is assigned.
Select Vault: Select an existing vault from the drop-down list.
ImportantStorage capacity usage incurs fees after backup data is stored. For more information, see Billing methods and billable items.
The system automatically selects the redundancy type based on regional support. In regions that support zone-redundant storage, backup repositories or archive repositories are created with zone redundancy by default; in other regions, locally redundant backup repositories or archive repositories are created by default. You do not need to make a manual selection.
Vault Name
Name of the backup vault.
Vault Resource Group
Required only when Backup Vault is set to Create Vault. Specifies the resource group for the backup vault.
Resource groups simplify resource and permission management. For more information, see Create a resource group.
HANA Instance Information
HANA Instance Alias
Alias for the SAP HANA instance. Example:
Dev-saphana.Host Address
Private IP address of the ECS instance hosting the SAP HANA primary node. Example: 172.16.XX.XX.
Instance Number
Instance number specified during SAP HANA installation.
Username
Username of the SYSTEM database. Typically SYSTEM.
Password
Password for the SAP HANA connection.
SSL Connection
Turn on SSL Connection to connect to the database over SSL.
Verify SSL Certificate
Turn on Verify SSL Certificate to verify the SSL certificate of the database server.
HANA Instance Resource Group
Resource group to which the SAP HANA instance belongs.
Install the backup client and click Create.
Select whether to Use HTTPS to Transfer Data and select all nodes of the SAP HANA instance to register. Cloud Backup installs a backup client on these nodes. Use the search bar to find the destination ECS instance by Instance ID, Instance Name, or VPC ID.
NoteHTTPS encrypts data in transit but may reduce performance. Changes take effect on the next backup or restore job.
The system installs a backup client on the selected ECS instances. After installation, the SAP HANA instance status changes to Registered.

Delete a registered SAP HANA instance.
WarningDeleting an SAP HANA instance will also permanently delete all of its backup data and cause any running jobs to fail. Before proceeding, ensure you no longer need the data and that no jobs are active. This action cannot be undone.
Alert Settings
By default, alert notifications are sent to your Alibaba Cloud account on backup failure or client disconnection. Supported methods:
Disabled: No alert notifications are sent.
Same as Backup Vault: Uses the same alert method as the backup vault.
Notify Alibaba Cloud Account: Sends backup alerts to the Alibaba Cloud account by email.
Custom: Select specific contacts or contact groups to receive alerts.
