How Backint and log backup work

Log backup lets you restore an SAP HANA database to a specific point in time after data loss or corruption. Routing catalog backups through Backint enables cross-region restoration.

• Catalogs are SAP HANA metadata that describe your database structure, including table and view definitions and information about database systems. Catalog backup allows you to restructure your database during disaster recovery.

• Backint for catalog backup (catalog_backup_using_backint): Backint is the SAP HANA API for integrating with third-party backup software. Enabling this routes catalog backups through Alibaba Cloud Backup, which is required for cross-instance database restoration.

• Log backup to Backint (log_backup_using_backint): Routes SAP HANA redo log backups to Alibaba Cloud Backup via Backint, keeping log backups consistent with your other enterprise backup policies.

Configure Backint and log backup settings

1. Log on to the Cloud Backup console.

2. In the navigation pane on the left, choose Backup > ECS SAP HANA Backup.

3. In the top navigation bar, select a region.

4. After an SAP HANA instance is registered, find the instance and click the instance link on the SAP HANA Instance tab.

5. On the Databases tab, view the status of all the SAP HANA databases.

6. Find the database and choose More > Set Backup Parameters in the Actions column.

7. In the Set Backup Parameters panel, configure the parameters.

   

   Parameter	Required	Description
   Backint Settings
   Data Backup Configuration File	No	The path of the Backint parameter file used for data backup (data_backup_parameter_file). For more information, see Configure a data backup configuration file. Note Use the same configuration file for data backup, log backup, and catalog backup. For a multi-node SAP HANA instance, configure a separate data backup configuration file for each node.
   This configuration file is used for both log backup and Catalog backup.	No	Specifies whether to use the data backup configuration file for log backup and catalog backup. We recommend that you select this check box to keep all backup types on the same configuration file.
   Log Backup Configuration File	No	The Backint parameter file used for log backup (log_backup_parameter_file). Use the data backup configuration file for log backup.
   Catalog Backup Configuration File	No	The Backint parameter file used for catalog backup (catalog_backup_parameter_file). Use the data backup configuration file for catalog backup.
   Use Backint for Catalog Backup	No	Specifies whether to use Backint to back up catalogs (catalog_backup_using_backint). We recommend that you turn on this switch to improve the backup performance. Backint is an API for integrating with third-party backup software. SAP HANA backup supports the use of Backint to connect to enterprise-class backup solutions. This way, special backup and restoration (such as catalog backup) can be implemented by third-party software. Important If you turn off this switch, cross-instance database restoration is not supported.
   Log Backup Settings
   Auto Log Backup	Yes	Specifies whether to back up logs periodically. Enabled by default. Important If you turn off this switch, log backups are only stored locally.
   Log Backup to Backint	Yes	Specifies whether to use Backint to back up logs (log_backup_using_backint). When enabled, SAP HANA redo log backups are routed to Alibaba Cloud Backup via Backint, keeping log backups consistent with your other enterprise backup policies. Important If you turn off this switch, log backups are only stored locally.
   Log Backup Interval	Yes	The interval at which logs are backed up. Note The minimum log backup interval recommended by Cloud Backup is 15 minutes. To use a smaller interval, change the setting in HANA Studio or HANA Cockpit.

8. Click Create.
