This article explains how to translate speakers' voices in real-time using Alibaba Cloud Machine Translation.

Alibaba Cloud empowers the user experience with a neural network translation (NMT) system through the Machine Translation service during online real-time events like conference videos, training courses, and more.

What Is Machine Translation?

Alibaba Cloud has developed a deep neural network translation (NMT) system based on the attention mechanism called Machine Translation. It can decode a single sentence and translate the result. The service is available in e-commerce and universal edition. The e-commerce-linked services with basic data fields provide high-quality e-commerce translation between English and Chinese, Spanish, Russian, French, Portuguese, Arabic, Thai, Turkish, Vietnamese, Indonesian, and other languages. This includes SEO, searches, product titles, product details, product comments, instant messaging, and risk control. The universal edition provides high-quality translation between Chinese and English. It adopts Alibaba's advanced neural network translation model and works for daily communication, traveling abroad, and more.

Machine Translation Benefits

Machine translation eliminates language barriers in most scenarios. It supports up to 243 translation language pairs and offers some benefits and advantages:

  • A standardized API encapsulation reduces the R&D cost significantly
  • It is optimized for various e-commerce scenarios such as title, attribute, search, comment, and communication. It supports the flexible real-time intervention.
  • It is stable and reliable, with 99.99% service reliability and a capacity to decode a single sentence in 100 milliseconds with a single machine.

Use Case Scenarios

Machine translation can be used in various scenarios:

  • Product information translation translates product titles, descriptions, categories, and other information to help sellers quickly develop overseas businesses and drive transactions.
  • Buyer-Seller Communication: Translate instant messages between buyers and sellers to facilitate cross-border trades
  • Conference speech translation recognizes and translates speakers' voices in real-time during conferences or live broadcasts and provides bilingual subtitles.

Running the Machine Translation Service

Go to your Alibaba cloud panel account. If don't have an account yet, you can create one. (Get a coupon during the March Mega Sale!)

Log in to your Alibaba Cloud account, go to the Artificial Intelligence service, and choose Machine Translation:

You will be redirected to the service home page. The translation model provides translation models in the general, e-commerce, medical, and social fields and supports user-defined training and customization models:

Go to the Universal translation engine and click Open now to activate the service. You should pay attention to the warning message telling you to purchase the resource package of each product to enjoy a discount. Otherwise, you will be charged normally:

After that, you will be notified that the operation is complete:

Now, you need to buy each service. Return to the machine translation service and buy the Universal translation engine service:

Return to the console and do the same for the e-commerce edition:

Two services are now available. This means you can use them without worrying about extra billing:

You can go to the Test Center menu to try the translation process. You can select the General Edition or Professional Engine for the e-commerce edition. In our case, we made a test with the General Edition. The input language was English, and the output language was French. After a test, you can see that the statistic has also changed:

Exploring Machine Translation API

Let's explore the OpenAPI environment to learn more about the API used for machine translation:

You can look at API debugging. Choose the region and the TransalteEcommerce for this example. Then, you can fill in the necessary information and initiate the API call:
