The 24th ACM International Conference on Architectural Support for Programming Languages and Operating Systems (ASPLOS'19) was held in Providence from April 13 to 17, 2019. Xiao Zheng, a senior technical expert from Alibaba Cloud, delivered a technical report on behalf of the team.
The theme of the paper is "Fast and Scalable VMM Live Upgrade in Large Cloud Infrastructure". The authors are Xiantao Zhang, Xiao Zheng, Yibin Shen and others. This paper was accepted by ASPLOS'19, a top-level conference on computer system architecture, which is the recognition from the industry for the breakthrough technology, VMM Live Upgrade.

This paper systematically describes the issue with service live upgrades on infrastructure faced by the current cloud computing field. This paper proposes a new and more effective method than Live Migration. This method is especially suitable for ultra-large scale clusters, and solves problems that have plagued the cloud computing industry for many years. This solution is widely used in Alibaba Cloud, and serves millions of customer virtual machines. The paper demonstrates that it is possible to replace the underlying virtualization components at a millisecond-level speed without having to interrupt customers' services.
The Alibaba Cloud Live Upgrade technology has features that allow any number of virtual machines with any specifications to be upgraded live at the same time, and the upgrade time is consistent. What's more, in the absence of a Live Migration solution for heterogeneous computing devices industry-wide, Alibaba Cloud Live Upgrade technology also supports virtual machines, such as heterogeneous computing devices, that work in a straight-through manner. It has helped ECS to perform rapid upgrade and iteration over the past five years, ensuring rapid progress of products and services.
