Server Migration Center:Resolve the "Use of NFS/CIFS detected. Upgrade can't proceed" error

Last Updated:Jun 02, 2026

Problem description

This error occurs during operating system migration with Server Migration Center (SMC).

Cause

Network File System (NFS) and Common Internet File System (CIFS) allow clients to access files on a server in the same way that they access local files. This capability relies on network protocol stacks and network interface controllers (NICs). During OS migration, driver and software installation for Anolis OS or Alibaba Cloud Linux may disrupt network connectivity. If an NFS or CIFS file system is mounted on an Elastic Compute Service (ECS) instance, or if you attempt to access remote files by using NFS or CIFS, unexpected errors may occur.

Solution

  1. Unmount and disable the NFS or CIFS file system before migration:

  2. Restart the migration job.

  3. After migration completes, remount the NFS or CIFS file system:

  4. After you resolve the network issue, run the SMC client to retry the operation. For more information, see Run the SMC client.
