ApsaraDB RDS:Change the storage type from ESSD to Premium ESSD

Last Updated:Mar 28, 2026

Premium ESSD extends all ESSD capabilities with three additional features: I/O performance burst, Buffer Pool Extension (BPE), and data archiving. This topic describes how to change the storage type of an ApsaraDB RDS for PostgreSQL instance from ESSD to Premium ESSD.

Warning

Changing from ESSD to Premium ESSD is irreversible. You cannot revert the instance to any other storage type after the upgrade. Plan carefully before proceeding.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, make sure that:

  • The RDS instance uses an ESSD (any performance level (PL) is supported)

  • The RDS instance is not a serverless instance

Impacts

The change takes effect immediately and causes no transient connections. In most cases, workloads are unaffected. In some cases, IOPS may fluctuate during the transition. Perform this operation during off-peak hours.

Scope of change

The change applies to different nodes depending on the RDS edition. An RDS instance that runs RDS Cluster Edition is referred to as an RDS cluster.

RDS editionNodes affected
RDS Cluster EditionAll primary and secondary nodes in the RDS cluster
RDS High-availability EditionThe primary and secondary RDS instances
RDS Basic EditionThe RDS instance

The change does not affect read-only instances. To change the storage type of a read-only instance, go to its instance details page.

During the change, you can configure only the I/O performance burst feature. Other settings cannot be modified.

Change the storage type

  1. Log on to the ApsaraDB RDS console and go to the Instances page. In the top navigation bar, select the region where the RDS instance resides. Find the instance and click its ID.

  2. In the Basic Information section, click Upgrade Storage Type next to Storage Type.

  3. (Optional) Enable the I/O performance burst feature. This feature is disabled by default. For configuration details, see Use the I/O performance burst feature.

  4. On the Change Specifications page, read and select Terms of Service, then click Pay Now.

The instance status changes to Upgrading. When the status returns to Running, the upgrade is complete.
