Starting April 27, 2025, ApsaraDB RDS for MySQL renames two storage types: local SSD becomes Premium Local SSD, and general ESSD becomes Premium ESSD. Along with the renaming, both storage types receive significant capability enhancements that improve performance and reduce costs.
Storage type renaming
The following RDS for MySQL storage types are renamed starting April 27, 2025:

Storage compression: Reduces storage costs by up to 50% using Alibaba Cloud's intelligent transparent compression disk technology with an embedded intelligent chip.
Premium ESSD
The following enhancements apply to Premium ESSD (formerly general ESSD):
I/O acceleration, write optimization, and I/O burst: Improves hybrid read/write performance by 15%.
Storage compression: Reduces storage costs by up to 50% using Alibaba Cloud's intelligent transparent compression disk technology with an embedded intelligent chip.
Cold data archiving: Reduces storage costs by archiving infrequently accessed data to lower-cost storage.
