Vector Retrieval Service for Milvus:Scale an instance

Last Updated:Sep 22, 2025

If your current instance configuration no longer meets your performance or cost requirements, you can upgrade or downgrade the instance by modifying its node specs and quantity.

Prerequisites

  • The Milvus instance is in the Running status.

  • Your Alibaba Cloud account has no unpaid orders.

You must settle or cancel any unpaid orders before proceeding.

Usage notes

  • Edition limitation: You cannot upgrade an instance from Basic Edition to Standard Edition.

  • Impact on operations:

    • You cannot perform any actions on the instance during the upgrade or downgrade process. We recommend performing scaling operations during off-peak hours.

    • The scaling process is designed to be seamless, with minimal impact on read and write operations.

  • How upgrade works:

    • The system first allocates and initializes new nodes, which typically takes a few minutes.

    • After the new nodes are ready, the instance automatically rebalances data across all nodes to ensure even distribution.

    • The time required for data rebalancing depends on the cluster load and can range from several minutes to tens of minutes.

  • How downgrade works:

    • The system first migrates data from the nodes that will be removed to the remaining nodes. The time required depends on the cluster load and can range from several minutes to tens of minutes.

    • After data migration is complete, the system decommissions the specified nodes and releases their resources.

Upgrade an instance

  1. Navigate to the instance list page.

    1. Log on to the Vector Retrieval Service for Milvus console.

    2. In the left navigation pane, click Instances.

  3. On the Upgrade/Downgrade page, adjust the node specs or quantity, and click Buy Now.

  4. You can monitor the process on the Instances page. When the instance status returns to Running, the scaling is complete.

Downgrade an instance

  1. On the instance list page, find the target instance and click image > Downgrade in the Actions column.

  2. In the Downgrade dialog, review the information and click OK.

  3. On the Downgrade page, adjust the node specs or quantity, and click Buy Now.

  4. You can monitor the process on the Instances page. When the instance status returns to Running, the scaling is complete.
