After you create an instance, if its current configuration no longer meets your business requirements, you can modify the node configuration to meet those requirements.
Prerequisites

The instance status is Running.

Your Alibaba Cloud account has no unpaid orders.
If there are unpaid orders, you must pay for or cancel them first.
Notes

Version limitation: You cannot upgrade a Basic Edition instance to Standard Edition.

Impact of upgrade and downgrade operations:

No operations can be performed on the instance during the upgrade or downgrade. We recommend that you perform this operation during off-peak hours.

The upgrade or downgrade process is designed to be seamless and does not affect query or write paths, which ensures business continuity.

Upgrade notes:

An upgrade typically takes a few minutes and mainly involves allocating and initializing new nodes.

After scale-out, the instance automatically performs data migration (data rebalancing) to ensure even data distribution.

The time required for data rebalancing depends on the cluster load and usually ranges from several to tens of minutes.

Downgrade notes:

A downgrade first triggers data migration to ensure that data on the removed nodes is safely migrated to the remaining nodes. The time required for data migration depends on the cluster load and usually ranges from several to tens of minutes.

After data migration is complete, the system releases the downgraded nodes and their resources.

Upgrade

Go to the instance list page.
Log on to the Alibaba Cloud Milvus console.

In the left navigation pane, click Milvus Instances.

In the top menu bar, select a region as needed.

On the Instance List page, find the target instance and click Upgrade in the Actions column.

On the Upgrade/Downgrade page, modify the node specifications and node count, and click Buy Now.
You can view the instance status on the Instance List page in the console. When the instance status changes to Running, the instance has been successfully created.
You can upgrade or downgrade a single node type independently. For example, you can upgrade only the Query Node from 4 vCPU 16 GiB to 8 vCPU 32 GiB without changing the specifications of other node types, such as the Data Node or Proxy. You can adjust the specifications and count of each node type independently on the Upgrade/Downgrade page. The configurable node types vary with the instance edition and specifications, and the actual options displayed on the Upgrade/Downgrade page prevail.
Downgrade

On the Instances page, find the target instance and choose
> Downgrade in the Actions column. -
In the dialog box that appears, review the notes and click OK.

On the Downgrade page, modify the node specifications and node count, and click Buy Now.
You can view the instance status on the Instance List page in the console. When the instance status changes to Running, the instance has been successfully created.
