Vector Retrieval Service for Milvus:Upgrade or downgrade an instance

Last Updated:Jun 02, 2026

Modify the node configuration of a Milvus instance to meet changing business requirements.

Prerequisites

  • The instance status is Running.

  • Your Alibaba Cloud account has no unpaid orders.

Pay for or cancel unpaid orders first.

Notes

  • Version limitation: You cannot upgrade an entry-level edition instance to Standard Edition.

  • Impact:

    • No operations can be performed on the instance during this process. We recommend that you perform this operation during off-peak hours.

    • The process is seamless and does not affect query or write paths. This ensures business continuity.

  • Upgrade:

    • Upgrades typically take a few minutes and mainly involve allocating and initializing new nodes.

    • After scale-out, the instance automatically performs data migration (data rebalancing) to ensure even distribution.

    • Data rebalancing usually takes several to tens of minutes depending on cluster load.

  • Downgrade:

    • A downgrade first migrates data from removed nodes to remaining nodes to ensure data is safely migrated. Migration usually takes several to tens of minutes depending on cluster load.

    • After migration, the system releases the downgraded nodes and their resources.
