Vector Retrieval Service for Milvus:Scale an instance

Last Updated:Feb 27, 2026

Modify the node specifications and quantity of a Vector Retrieval Service for Milvus instance to match your current performance or cost requirements.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, ensure that you have:

  • A Milvus instance in the Running status

  • No unpaid orders on your Alibaba Cloud account (settle or cancel any unpaid orders before you proceed)

Warning

You cannot upgrade an instance from Basic Edition to Standard Edition.

Note

No actions can be performed on the instance during the scaling process. Although the process is designed to be seamless with minimal impact on read and write operations, perform scaling operations during off-peak hours.

Upgrade an instance

When you upgrade an instance, the system allocates and initializes new nodes. This typically takes a few minutes. After the new nodes are ready, the instance automatically rebalances data across all nodes to ensure even distribution. The time required for data rebalancing depends on the cluster load and can range from several minutes to tens of minutes.

Procedure

  1. Log on to the Vector Retrieval Service for Milvus console.

  2. In the left-side navigation pane, click Instances.

  3. From the top menu bar, select the region where your instance is located.

  4. Find the target instance and click Upgrade in the Actions column.

  5. On the Upgrade/Downgrade page, adjust the node specs or quantity, and click Buy Now.

  6. On the Instances page, monitor the instance status. When the status returns to Running, the upgrade is complete.

Downgrade an instance

When you downgrade an instance, the system migrates data from the nodes that will be removed to the remaining nodes. The time required depends on the cluster load and can range from several minutes to tens of minutes. After data migration is complete, the system decommissions the specified nodes and releases their resources.

Procedure

  1. On the Instances page, find the target instance and click image > Downgrade in the Actions column.

  2. In the Downgrade dialog, review the information and click OK.

  3. On the Downgrade page, adjust the node specs or quantity, and click Buy Now.

  4. On the Instances page, monitor the instance status. When the status returns to Running, the downgrade is complete.
