Vector Retrieval Service for Milvus:Sentiment Analysis

Last Updated:Aug 03, 2026

The AI_SENTIMENT function classifies text, images, or videos into the best-matching sentiment category. Use it for customer review analysis, promotional material tagging, and content operations dashboards.

Command format

The following sections show two ways to use AI_SENTIMENT: a direct REST API call for on-demand analysis and a Python Collection Function that binds sentiment analysis to a collection schema for automatic classification at insert time.

REST API

REST API

POST /v2/vectordb/ai/sentiment
Content-Type: application/json

{
  "model_name": "<model_name>",
  "texts": ["<text or media URL>"],
  "params": {"categories": ["positive", "negative", "neutral"]}
}

Python (collection function)

Python (collection function)

schema = MilvusClient.create_schema(auto_id=True, enable_dynamic_field=False)
schema.add_field("id", DataType.INT64, is_primary=True)
schema.add_field("content", DataType.VARCHAR, max_length=4096)
schema.add_field("sentiment", DataType.VARCHAR, max_length=64)
schema.add_field("dummy_vector", DataType.FLOAT_VECTOR, dim=2)
schema.add_function(
    Function(
        name="analyze_sentiment",
        function_type=texttransform_function_type(),
        input_field_names=["content"],
        output_field_names=["sentiment"],
        params={
            "provider": "aliyun_milvus",
            "model_name": "<model_name>",
            "task": "ai_sentiment",
            "categories": "positive,negative,neutral",
            "temperature": "0",
        },
    )
)

Parameters

ParameterDescription
model_nameRequired. The model name. For images and videos, specify a multi-modal model such as qwen3.7-plus.
textsRequired for REST API. The content to analyze, or image/video URLs accessible to the model.
categoriesOptional. Sentiment categories. Accepts an array or a comma-separated string. 1 to 10 categories are supported. Default values: positive, negative, neutral, and mixed.
promptOptional. Supplementary judgment rules. Maximum 5,000 characters. ${...} is not supported.
media_typeOptional. Valid values: image, video.
temperature / max_concurrency / timeout_secOptional. Settings for model stability, concurrency, and timeout.
provider / taskRequired for Collection Function only. Fixed values: aliyun_milvus and ai_sentiment.

Response

data.output.outputs returns sentiment categories in the same order as the input. Each non-null result is one of the categories specified in the categories field of the request. null is returned when the sentiment cannot be determined. In the Collection Function approach, the result is written to the target text field.

Example 1: Build a post-sale review sentiment dashboard (text)

The after-sales team classifies reviews into designated categories and aggregates them into a dashboard. Each result belongs to one of the specified categories or is null.

Expected result: Results are returned in the same order as the input. Each result is one of the declared categories or null. On the business side, only non-null categories are aggregated. null is counted as undetermined and routed to manual review.

Example 2: Tag the sentiment of clothing promotional images (image)

The operations team uses the model to generate three sentiment labels, then reviews them based on brand tone. No category is assumed to be mandatory. null returns are also accepted.
