Create Edge Node Service (ENS) instances to deploy compute resources across edge locations. This topic describes how to create, configure, and verify ENS instances in the ENS console.
Usage notes
Before you create an instance, ensure that you have activated the ENS service. For more information, see Activate ENS.
ENS supports various instance types and regions. Contact your Alibaba Cloud account manager to request specific instance types and regions.
For information about instance status changes during creation and management, see Instance statuses.
Create an instance
Log on to the ENS console.
In the left-side navigation pane, choose .
On the Instances page, click Create Instance.
Select Basic Configurations.
Configuration Item
Description
Billing Method
The following billing methods are available: subscription and pay-as-you-go.
NoteSubscription is available for all instance types. Pay-as-you-go is available for X86 compute-optimized instance types only.
Instance Type
ENS supports instance types such as X86 compute-optimized, X86 bare metal, and heterogeneous computing. Select an instance type as needed.
Instance Type
Select an appropriate instance type as needed. For more information, see Instance overview.
NoteC indicates vCPU and G indicates memory. For example, a compute-optimized instance type with 4C8G has 4 vCPU cores and 8 GB of memory. You can submit a ticket or contact your Alibaba Cloud account manager to request the instances that you need.
Image
You can select a custom image or a public image.
Custom image: You can select custom images stored in different regions. You can create custom images in the console. For more information, see Create a custom image or Use a build machine to create a custom image.
Public image: Alibaba Cloud provides third-party commercial images and open source public images. For more information, see Public images.
Configure Network and Storage.
Configuration Item
Description
Network
The following network types are available: Managed Network and Self-built Network.
If you do not need to use custom CIDR blocks, select Managed Network. ENS allocates a default CIDR block to you.
In Managed Network mode, you can schedule computing power by region, province, city, edge zone, or regions outside China. If you schedule computing power by region, province, or city, you can enter a node scheduling policy to select suitable edge zones. If you schedule computing power by edge zone or regions outside China, instances are created only within the specified scope.
To use a custom CIDR block, select Self-built Network.
Region
Select a region and specify the number of instances as needed.
If you create a public network interface controller (NIC), you must specify the billing method, IP type, ISP, and bandwidth throttling for the public NIC.
NoteIf an instance has multiple NICs, you must manually configure the default NIC for Internet access.
You can configure public NICs only for X86 compute-optimized, X86 bare machine, and ARM compute-optimized instance types.
For more information about the billing rules for public bandwidth, see Public bandwidth billing.
System Disk and Data Disks
Select the type and capacity for the system disk and data disks as needed.
NoteThe system disk capacity must be a multiple of 10 and at least 20 GB. The capacities of the system disk and data disks must be greater than or equal to the default capacity of the selected image.
If the system disk capacity is greater than the default image capacity, you must scale out the partitions and file systems.
The billing method for cloud disks created with an instance is the same as the billing method for the instance.
You cannot select system disks and data disks for X86 bare machine, X86 bare metal, and heterogeneous bare metal instance types.
Security Group
Select a security group. A security group functions as a virtual firewall to control network access.
NoteSecurity groups are available for X86 compute-optimized and ARM compute-optimized instance types.
Configure System Settings.
Configuration Item
Description
Password Settings
You can set a logon password or use a key pair.
NoteKey pairs are available only for Linux instances of the X86 compute-optimized, heterogeneous virtual machine, and ARM compute-optimized types.
Instance Name
You can set the Instance Name and Hostname. You can also add a sequential suffix or use a custom sequential instance name.
NoteUse the
namePrefix[beginNumber, bits]nameSuffixformat to set different sequential names for instances. The maximum value ofbitsis 6.The sequential suffix starts from 001 and increments. The maximum value is 999.
Tags
Set instance tags as needed.
Advanced Settings
You can use instance custom data as a script to run when the instance starts. This lets you automate instance configurations. You can also pass the data to the instance. To inject custom data, enter it in the advanced settings.
Confirm the configurations, select the Edge Node Service (ENS) Terms of Service checkbox, and then click Confirm Order. If you plan to use the instance for a long time, select the Enable Auto-renewal checkbox.
On the payment page, select the Use Credits checkbox if needed, and click Purchase. After the payment is complete, a success message is displayed.
If you purchase a subscription instance, you are redirected to the payment page. After you complete the payment, the instance is created.
If you purchase a pay-as-you-go instance, the system immediately starts to create the instance.
After the instance is created, log on to the instance to check whether the data migration is successful.
