Elastic IP addresses (EIPs) support the pay-as-you-go billing method. Pay-as-you-go EIPs support the pay-by-data-transfer and pay-by-bandwidth metering methods.

Overview

The pay-as-you-go billing method allows you to use resources before you pay for them. The following table describes the differences between pay-by-data-transfer EIPs and pay-by-bandwidth EIPs.

Billing method switching

You can change the metering method from pay-by-data-transfer to pay-by-bandwidth or from pay-by-bandwidth to pay-by-data-transfer. The change takes effect at 00:00:00 on the following day.

Maximum bandwidth
  • The maximum bandwidth value is not a guaranteed value. It indicates the upper limit of bandwidth and is for reference only. In scenarios where demand outstrips resource supplies, the bandwidth may not reach the specified value.
  • For each Alibaba Cloud account, the sum of maximum bandwidth values of all pay-by-data-transfer EIPs in a region cannot exceed 5 Gbit/s. If your business requires guaranteed bandwidth or larger bandwidth, you must purchase pay-by-bandwidth EIPs.
  • The maximum bandwidth value is a guaranteed value. In scenarios where demand outstrips resource supplies, the bandwidth can reach the specified value.
  • For each Alibaba Cloud account, the sum of the maximum bandwidth values of all pay-by-bandwidth EIPs in each region cannot exceed 50 Gbit/s. If your business requires larger bandwidth, contact your customer manager.
Note The EIP association fee is not unique to pay-as-you-go EIPs. The billing cycle and bill generation time of EIP association fees is not determined by the metering method. Whether you are charged an EIP association fee is determined by the number of times that you associate EIPs in each region with each Alibaba Cloud account. For more information, see Billable items.

Internet data transfer fees

Data transfer fees (for pay-by-data-transfer EIPs)

You are charged based on the actual data transfer over the Internet per hour. Fees are calculated and bills are generated on an hourly basis. If you use a pay-by-data-transfer EIP for less than 1 hour in a billing cycle, the usage duration is rounded up to 1 hour.

Within one billing cycle:
Data transfer fee = Unit price of data transfer (USD/GB) × Amount of data transfer (GB)
The amount of data transfer refers to the cumulative outbound traffic of an EIP. You are not charged for inbound traffic. Outbound traffic refers to the traffic that is transmitted from Alibaba Cloud to the Internet.
Note We recommend that you set the maximum bandwidth value based on your business requirements to prevent unexpected data transfer charges caused by malicious requests or program errors.
EIPs support the following line types: BGP (Multi-ISP) and BGP (Multi-ISP) Pro. The data transfer unit price of each line type is different.

Bandwidth fees (for pay-by-bandwidth EIPs)

You are charged based on the specified maximum bandwidth and the usage duration. Fees are calculated and bills are generated on a daily basis. Fees can also be calculated on an hourly basis and settled on a daily basis. The usage duration refers to the period of time when a pay-by-bandwidth EIP is used. If you use a pay-by-bandwidth EIP for less than 1 hour, the usage duration is rounded up to 1 hour. For example, if you create a pay-by-bandwidth EIP at 09:00:00 (UTC+8) and release the EIP at 12:30:00 (UTC+8), the usage duration is (4/24) days.

  • The bandwidth fee of an EIP of BGP (Multi-ISP) is calculated based on a tiered pricing model with 5 Mbit/s as the threshold. The following formulas show how to calculate the bandwidth fee in different scenarios:
    • 1 Mbit/s ≤ Maximum bandwidth value ≤ 5 Mbit/s:
      Bandwidth fee = Unit price for bandwidth that is between 1 Mbit/s and 5 Mbit/s (USD/day per Mbit/s) × [Usage duration (hours)/24] (days) × Maximum bandwidth value (Mbit/s)
    • Maximum bandwidth value > 5 Mbit/s:
      Bandwidth fee = Unit price for bandwidth of 5 Mbit/s (USD/day per Mbit/s) × [Usage duration (hours)/24] (days) × 5 + Unit price for bandwidth that is higher than 5 Mbit/s (USD/day per Mbit/s) × [Usage duration (hours)/24] (days) × (n - 5)

      In the preceding formula, n represents the maximum bandwidth value.

  • The bandwidth fee of an EIP of BGP (Multi-ISP) Pro is calculated by using the following formula:
    Bandwidth fee = Bandwidth unit price (USD/day per Mbit/s) × [Usage duration (hours)/24] (days) × Maximum bandwidth (Mbit/s)

You can change the maximum bandwidth value of an EIP as needed. If you change the maximum bandwidth value of an EIP, the bandwidth fee for the day is calculated based on the highest maximum bandwidth value on that day.

EIPs support the following line types: BGP (Multi-ISP) and BGP (Multi-ISP) Pro. The bandwidth unit price of each line type is different.

EIP configuration fees

You are charged EIP configuration fees because EIPs occupy public IP addresses. You are charged based on the unit prices of EIPs and the usage duration.

You are not charged an EIP configuration fee for an EIP if the following conditions are met: The EIP is associated with an Elastic Compute Service (ECS) instance in a virtual private cloud (VPC) or an elastic container instance. The maximum number of EIPs that your Alibaba Cloud account can own does not exceed 2,000.
Note

You are charged EIP configuration fees on an hourly basis regardless of the metering method. The bill generation time varies based on the metering method. The bills for pay-by-data-transfer EIPs are generated on an hourly basis. The unit of unit prices is USD/hour per EIP. The bills for pay-by-bandwidth EIPs are generated on a daily basis. The unit of unit prices is USD/day per EIP.

Billing examples

For example, the EIP quota of your Alibaba Cloud account (Account A) is 500 and you created 450 EIPs in the China (Beijing) region. You associated 400 EIPs with Classic Load Balancer (CLB) instances and 50 EIPs with ECS instances. In this case, you are charged configuration fees for the EIPs that are associated with the CLB instances. You are not charged configuration fees for the EIPs that are associated with the ECS instances. The total configuration fee per hour is calculated based on the following formula:400 × USD 0.003/hour × 1 hour + 50 × USD 0/hour × 1 hour = USD 1.2.

Due to business development, you requested a quota increase and the EIP quota increased to 2,500. In this case, you are charged configuration fees for all of the 450 EIPs. The total configuration fee per hour is calculated based on the following formula:450 × USD 0.003/hour × 1 hour = USD 1.35

Anti-DDoS fee (optional)

You are not charged for using Anti-DDoS Origin Basic. You are charged for using Anti-DDoS Pro/Premium.

You are charged Anti-DDoS fees on an hourly basis regardless of the metering method. The bill generation time varies based on the metering method. The bills for pay-by-data-transfer EIPs are generated on an hourly basis. The unit of unit prices is USD/hour per EIP. The bills for pay-by-bandwidth EIPs are generated on a daily basis. The unit of unit prices is USD/day per EIP.

Anti-DDoS fee = Protection unit price × Usage duration

Billing examples

For example, you create an EIP in the China (Hangzhou) region at 09:30:00 (UTC+8) and set the maximum bandwidth value to 10 Mbit/s. Then, you associate the EIP with a NAT gateway and start your services. In this case, you are charged a data transfer fee. You change the maximum bandwidth value twice on the same day:
  • At 17:00:00 (UTC+8), you change the maximum bandwidth value from 10 Mbit/s to 20 Mbit/s.
  • At 23:00:00 (UTC+8), you change the maximum bandwidth value from 20 Mbit/s to 15 Mbit/s.

  • Unit price of data transfer: In this example, the unit price of data transfer in the China (Hangzhou) region is USD 0.123 per GB.
  • Amount of data transfer: In this example, 60 GB of data is used on that day.
  • Data transfer fee of the EIP on that day = Unit price of data transfer (USD/GB) × Amount of data transfer (GB) = 0.123 (USD/GB) × 60 (GB) = USD 7.38.
  • Protection unit price: In this example, the protection unit price in the China (Hangzhou) region is 0.042 USD/hour/instance.
  • Anti-DDoS fee = Protection unit price × Usage duration = 0.042 (USD/hour/instance) × 15 (hours) × 1 = USD 0.63.
  • If Anti-DDoS Origin Basic is used: Total fees = Configuration fee (USD) + Data transfer fee (USD) = USD 0.045 + USD 7.38 = USD 7.425.
  • If Anti-DDoS Pro/Premium is used: Total fees = Configuration fee (USD) + Data transfer fee (USD) + Anti-DDoS fee (USD) = USD 0.045 + USD 7.38 + USD 0.63 = USD 8.055.
Pay-by-bandwidth
  • Instance unit price: In this example, the instance unit price of the EIP in the China (Hangzhou) region is USD 0.074 per day.
  • Usage duration: In this example, the EIP is used for 14.5 hours on that day. The usage duration is rounded up to 15 hours.
  • Configuration fee of the EIP on that day = Instance unit price (USD/day) × Usage duration (days) × Number of EIPs = 0.074 (USD/day) × [15 (hours)/24 (hours)] (days) × 1 = USD 0.04625.
  • Maximum bandwidth value: The bandwidth fee is calculated based on the highest maximum bandwidth value on that day. In this example, the highest maximum bandwidth value is 20 Mbit/s.
  • Bandwidth unit price: USD 0.71 per day [unit price for bandwidth of 5 Mbit/s in China (Hangzhou)] + USD 0.5 per day (unit price for bandwidth that is higher than 5 Mbit/s) × (20 - 5) = USD 8.21 per day.
  • Usage duration: In this example, the EIP is used for 14.5 hours on that day. The usage duration is rounded up to 15 hours.
  • Bandwidth fee of the EIP on that day = 8.21 (USD/day) × [15 (hours)/24 (hours)] (days) = USD 5.13125.
  • Protection unit price: In this example, the protection unit price in the China (Hangzhou) region is 1.008 USD/day/instance.
  • Anti-DDoS fee = Protection unit price × Usage duration = 1.008 (USD/hour/instance) × [15 (hours)/24 (hours)] (days) × 1 = USD 0.63
  • If Anti-DDoS Origin Basic is used: Total fees = Configuration fee (USD) + Data transfer fee (USD) = USD 0.04625 + USD 5.13125 = USD 5.1775.
  • If Anti-DDoS Pro/Premium is used: Total fees = Configuration fee (USD) + Data transfer fee (USD) + Anti-DDoS fee (USD) = USD 0.04625 + USD 5.13125 + USD 0.63 = USD 5.8075.

Resize the maximum bandwidth

You can change the maximum bandwidth value and metering method of a pay-as-you-go EIP.

  • You cannot change the metering method of an EIP that uses Anti-DDoS (Pro/Premium).
  • If you change only the maximum bandwidth of an EIP, the change immediately takes effect. If you change the metering method of an EIP, take note of the following information:
    • The new metering method takes effect at 00:00 the next day.
    • Before the new metering method takes effect, you cannot modify the maximum bandwidth of the EIP.
  1. Log on to the Elastic IP Address console .
  2. In the top navigation bar, select the region where the EIP is created.
  3. On the Elastic IP Addresses page, find the EIP that you want to manage and choose Related operations > Modify Configuration in the Actions column.
  4. On the Upgrade/Downgrade page, set the following parameters, select Terms of Service, and then click Buy Now.
    • Data Transfer: Select the metering method. You can select Pay-By-Data-Transfer or Pay-By-Bandwidth.
    • Maximum Bandwidth: Specify the maximum bandwidth. You can increase or decrease the maximum bandwidth. However, you cannot set the maximum bandwidth to zero.
