Images in Elastic Desktop Service (EDS) contain the OSs and the configurations that are required to create cloud desktops. The images are classified into system images, custom images, and shared images. System images are the default images provided by Alibaba Cloud. Custom images are created based on the settings of existing cloud desktops or snapshots. Shared images are the images that you share with other Alibaba Cloud accounts.

Custom images

You can create custom images based on the settings of existing cloud desktops or snapshots. You can also import custom images that contain OSs, configurations, and custom deployment data of services or applications from your local computer. You can use custom images to efficiently create multiple cloud desktops that have the same configurations to meet your business requirements. This way, you do not need to perform repeated operations.

  • Create a custom image based on the settings of an existing cloud desktop or a snapshot
The following figure shows the methods that you can use to create a custom image:Custom image
    • Create an image by using a cloud desktop

If you use settings of a cloud desktop to create a custom image, data on the system disk and the data disk of the cloud desktop is contained in the custom image.

    • Create an image by using a snapshot

If you use only a system disk snapshot of a cloud desktop to create a custom image, only the data on the system disk of the cloud desktop is contained in the custom image.

  • Import a custom image from your local computer

You can only import Windows images. For more information, see Import an image.

After you create or import a custom image, you can use the custom image to create a cloud desktop template. Then, you can use the template to create multiple cloud desktops that have the same configurations with ease. For more information, see Create a desktop template.

Shared images

Shared images can be used to create cloud desktops across accounts. After you create a custom image, you can share the custom image with other Alibaba Cloud accounts. The Alibaba Cloud accounts can create cloud desktops by using the shared image. You can also unshare images from the Alibaba Cloud accounts.
