Assume that you want to migrate your services to the cloud and you already use specific public IP addresses to provide services or for communication with your partners. If you change the public IP addresses during the migration, customer experience may be affected and migration costs may increase. In this case, you can use the Bring Your Own IP Addresses (BYOIP) feature to migrate your public IP addresses to Alibaba Cloud. BYOIP allows you to complete migration without changing your public IP addresses. BYOIP supports only IPv4 addresses.
Feature description
Migration process
BYOIP allows you to migrate your public IP addresses to Alibaba Cloud and continue to use these IP addresses on Alibaba Cloud. After you migrate your public IP addresses to Alibaba Cloud, the public IP addresses support the same elasticity and can use the same high-quality lines as elastic IP addresses (EIPs). You can also manage the public IP addresses in the same way you manage EIPs.
BYOIP limits
Only IPv4 addresses can be migrated. IPv6 addresses cannot be migrated.
The public IPv4 addresses must be registered with a Regional Internet Registry (RIR). You can contact the ISP to obtain more information.
The following regions support IP address migration to the cloud.
Area
Supported region
North America
US (Silicon Valley) and US (Virginia)
Asia Pacific
China (Hong Kong), Singapore, Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur), Japan (Tokyo), and Indonesia (Jakarta)
Europe
Germany (Frankfurt) and UK (London)
The minimum mask length for the IPv4 address CIDR block is /23, which can contain at most 29=512 IP addresses.
The waiting time of migrating IP addresses to or off the cloud:
IP addresses migrated to the cloud are not immediately effective. You need to wait until Alibaba Cloud applies for broadcasting the IP addresses from the ISP. This process takes about one month.
Similarly, you need to wait about one month if you migrate IP addresses off the cloud.
Procedure
Step 1: Update the routing information
You must go to the corresponding RIR platform to update the route information by changing the ASN of the IP address range to AS45102.
The following example shows how to modify the ASN of an IP address range registered with Network Coordination Center (RIPE NCC). For more information, contact your ISP.
Log on to the RIPE NCC Webupdates page.
Select route from the Object type drop-down list and click Create.
On the Create "route" object page, select a role and maintainer pair from the drop-down list.
In the Password authentication field, enter the password and click Submit.
Configure the route reflector (RR) based on the following information, and then click Submit.
Parameter
Description
route
Enter the public IP address range.
origin
Enter the ASN. AS45102 is used in this example.
After you configure the route reflector, you can go to RADB to check whether the configuration takes effect.
Step 2: Apply for migrating public IP addresses to the cloud
After you update the routing information, you must submit a ticket to apply for migrating public IP addresses to the cloud.
Make sure that the following information is included in the ticket:
The public IP address range.
The region where the public IP address range is to be used.
The updated route information of the IP address range.
Other information is not required. Alibaba Cloud will contact you if additional information is required.
Step 3: Apply for specific EIPs
After you complete the preceding task, Alibaba Cloud will advertise the public IP address range from the specified region.
After you receive the notification, you can apply for specific EIPs by using the following methods:
Directly apply for specific EIPs : On the Elastic IP Addresses page, click Apply for Specific EIP. For more information, see Apply for a specific EIP.
Apply for EIPs from an address pool: You can add the migrated IP addresses to an IP address pool and apply for EIPs from the IP address pool. For more information, see Create and manage an IP address pool.
FAQ
Can I use my own ASN when I migrate my public IP addresses to the cloud?
No. You must use the ASN Alibaba Cloud, which is AS45102.
Is an EIP a native public IP address?
No.
A native public IP address is usually directly assigned to a device from an ISP. Such an address does not go through NAT or proxy servers and can be directly accessed by the Internet. If the device is directly exposed to the Internet, security issues may arise.
An EIP is a virtualized IP address that belongs to Alibaba Cloud. When an ECS instance associated with an EIP accesses the Internet, address translation is required. Therefore, an EIP is not a native public IP address.
How am I charged for using BYOIP?
After you use BYOIP and request EIPs, the EIPs support only the pay-by-bandwidth metering method. For more information, see EIP fees. After you migrate your own IP addresses, you are not charged public IP retention fees.
The IP addresses can be associate only with pay-by-bandwidth Internet Shared Bandwidth instances. For more information, see Internet Shared Bandwidth fees.
After you submit an application for IP address migration, Alibaba Cloud will contact you.
Can I use BGP (Multi-ISP) Pro EIPs?
Yes. Provide detailed information when you submit a ticket.

After the migration is complete, you can manage the public IP addresses in the same way you manage EIPs.
