Elastic IP Address:Bring Your Own IP (BYOIP)

Last Updated:Sep 22, 2025

Bring Your Own IP (BYOIP) lets you migrate your public IPv4 addresses to Alibaba Cloud, which ensures the IP addresses for your external-facing services remain unchanged when you migrate your business to the cloud.

Scope

  • BYOIP is not supported in the Chinese mainland regions. The supported regions are:

    Area

    Supported regions

    North America

US (Silicon Valley) and US (Virginia)

    Asia Pacific

China (Hong Kong), Singapore, Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur), Japan (Tokyo), and Indonesia (Jakarta)

    Europe

    Germany (Frankfurt) and UK (London)

  • Only IPv4 addresses can be migrated. IPv6 addresses are not supported. The most specific prefix you can bring is /23. Prefixes more specific than /23 (for example, /24) are not supported.

  • The public IPv4 addresses that you bring must be registered with a Regional Internet Registry (RIR). For more information, contact your IP address provider.

  • The BYOIP process requires collaboration between Alibaba Cloud and your carrier and cannot take effect immediately. The processing time depends on your carrier's response to Alibaba Cloud's request to advertise the IP addresses on your behalf. The process typically takes about one month. The same timeframe applies when you withdraw your IP addresses from the cloud.

Procedure

Using BYOIP to migrate your public IPv4 address range does not change its ownership. Alibaba Cloud, however, will advertise the range on the internet on your behalf. After Alibaba Cloud advertises the range, you can allocate specific Elastic IP Addresses (EIPs) from within the address range.

Step 1: Update routing information

To ensure correct route propagation, update your routing information in an Internet Routing Registry (IRR).

Log in to your RIR's web portal and set the origin attribute of your public IPv4 prefix to the Alibaba Cloud Autonomous System Number (ASN): AS45102. For specific instructions, see the documentation for your RIR: ARIN, RIPE, or APNIC.

After you create the route object, query your prefix on RADB to check if the origin attribute has been updated to AS45102.

Step 2: Apply for BYOIP

To apply for BYOIP, submit a ticket.

In your ticket, provide the following information: the public IPv4 prefix, the target region, and confirmation that you have updated the origin ASN to AS45102 in your RIR.

No other information is required at this stage. If we need more information after an initial assessment, an Alibaba Cloud representative will contact you. Please ensure your contact information is up to date.
Alibaba Cloud reserves the right to investigate the IP address range and reject any ranges with a history of malicious activity or a poor reputation.

After your request is approved, Alibaba Cloud will advertise your public IPv4 address range from the specified region by using the Alibaba Cloud ASN and add it to Alibaba Cloud's security protection list.

Step 3: Request a specific EIP

After the advertisement is complete, you can apply for EIPs from the address range using one of the following methods:

  • Go to the Elastic IP Address console, select the region where your prefix was advertised, and click Apply for Specific EIP.

  • Add the migrated public IP address range to an IP address pool, then create an EIP from the IP address pool.

IP address pools are not enabled by default. To use this feature, contact your account manager to request access.

Billing

BYOIP is free of charge. However, EIPs created from your address range support only the pay-as-you-go billing method (billed by fixed bandwidth).

  • EIP configuration fee (public IP retention fee): This fee is waived because you retain ownership of the address range.

  • Internet data transfer fee (bandwidth fee): This fee is charged based on the maximum bandwidth value you specify and the billing duration.

EIPs can only be added to a pay-as-you-go (billed by bandwidth) Internet Shared Bandwidth instance. You are charged according to the billing rules of Internet Shared Bandwidth.

After you submit a BYOIP application, Alibaba Cloud will assess your request. A dedicated representative will contact you to confirm the final details.

FAQs

Can I use my own ASN when I bring my on-premises public IP addresses to Alibaba Cloud?

No. To bring your on-premises public IP addresses to Alibaba Cloud, you must change the origin ASN for the IP prefix to the Alibaba Cloud ASN, AS45102. Alibaba Cloud advertises the prefix on your behalf. You cannot use your own ASN.

Is an EIP a native public IP address?

No, it is not.

A native public IP address typically refers to a public IP address assigned directly to a device by an Internet Service Provider (ISP) without going through Network Address Translation (NAT) or a proxy server. The device can use this IP address to directly access the Internet and be accessed from the Internet. However, this direct exposure to the Internet poses security risks.

An EIP is a virtualized IP address that belongs to Alibaba Cloud. For example, when an Elastic Compute Service (ECS) instance uses an EIP to access the Internet, its traffic passes through NAT. Therefore, an EIP is not a native public IP address.

Do you support BGP (Multi-ISP) Pro EIP advertisement?

Yes. Please specify this requirement when you apply.
