Bring Your Own IP (BYOIP) lets you migrate your public IPv4 address ranges to Alibaba Cloud. Alibaba Cloud advertises your prefix from its network using ASN AS45102, routing internet traffic for your addresses to the region where the prefix is advertised. You retain ownership of the IP address range throughout.
After advertisement begins, you can allocate elastic IP addresses (EIPs) from your range and associate them with cloud resources just like any other EIP.
The onboarding process has three steps:
Prepare routing records -- Update the Internet Routing Registry (IRR) to authorize Alibaba Cloud to advertise your prefix.
Submit a BYOIP request -- File a support ticket with your prefix details and target region.
Allocate EIPs -- Create EIPs from your address range after Alibaba Cloud begins advertising.
BYOIP requires coordination between Alibaba Cloud and your carrier and cannot take effect immediately. Processing typically takes about one month, depending on carrier response times. The same timeframe applies when withdrawing your IP addresses.
Supported regions
BYOIP is available in the following regions. It is not supported in Chinese mainland regions.
| Area | Supported regions |
|---|---|
| North America | US (Silicon Valley), US (Virginia) |
| Asia Pacific | China (Hong Kong), Singapore, Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur), Japan (Tokyo), Indonesia (Jakarta) |
| Europe | Germany (Frankfurt), UK (London) |
Prerequisites
An Alibaba Cloud account with access to the international site (alibabacloud.com).
A public IPv4 address range of at least /23 (512 addresses), registered with a Regional Internet Registry (RIR) such as ARIN, RIPE, or APNIC. Contact your IP address provider if you are unsure about your registration status.
Access to your RIR account so you can create or update route objects in an Internet Routing Registry (IRR).
A target region from the supported regions listed above.
Limitations
Only IPv4 addresses can be migrated. IPv6 addresses are not supported.
The most specific prefix you can bring is /23. Prefixes more specific than /23 (for example, /24) are not supported.
Your public IPv4 addresses must be registered with a Regional Internet Registry (RIR).
You cannot use your own ASN. All prefixes are advertised under the Alibaba Cloud ASN, AS45102.
BYOIP is not available in Chinese mainland regions.
The onboarding and withdrawal processes each take approximately one month, depending on carrier response times.
Procedure
Step 1: Update routing information
Update your routing information in an Internet Routing Registry (IRR) to ensure correct route propagation.
Log in to your RIR's web portal.
Create or update a route object for your public IPv4 prefix. Set the
originattribute to the Alibaba Cloud ASN: AS45102. For step-by-step instructions, see the documentation for your RIR:Verify the update by querying your prefix on RADB. Confirm that the
originattribute showsAS45102.
Step 2: Apply for BYOIP
Submit a ticket through the Alibaba Cloud support portal with the following information:
Your public IPv4 prefix (for example, 203.0.113.0/23).
The target region where you want the prefix advertised.
Confirmation that you have updated the origin ASN to AS45102 in your RIR.
If you need BGP (Multi-ISP) Pro EIP advertisement, specify this requirement in the ticket.
Alibaba Cloud reserves the right to investigate the IP address range and reject any ranges with a history of malicious activity or a poor reputation.
After your request is approved, Alibaba Cloud will:
Advertise your public IPv4 address range from the specified region using the Alibaba Cloud ASN.
Add the range to the Alibaba Cloud security protection list.
After you submit a BYOIP application, Alibaba Cloud will assess your request. A dedicated representative will contact you to confirm the final details.
Step 3: Allocate EIPs from your address range
After the advertisement is complete, allocate EIPs from your address range using either of the following methods.
Method 1: Use the EIP console
Go to the Elastic IP Address console.
Select the region where your prefix was advertised.
Click Apply for Specific EIP.
Enter an IP address from your BYOIP range and complete the allocation.
Method 2: Use an IP address pool
Add your migrated public IP address range to an IP address pool.
Create an EIP from the IP address pool. For instructions, see Create and manage IP address pools.
IP address pools are not enabled by default. To use this feature, contact your account manager to request access.
Billing
BYOIP itself is free of charge. EIPs created from your address range are billed as follows:
| Fee type | Details |
|---|---|
| EIP configuration fee (public IP retention fee) | Waived. Because you retain ownership of the address range, this fee does not apply. |
| Internet data transfer fee (bandwidth fee) | Charged based on the maximum bandwidth value you specify and the billing duration. For pricing details, see Pay-as-you-go billing. |
EIPs created from BYOIP address ranges support only the pay-as-you-go billing method, billed by fixed bandwidth.
Internet Shared Bandwidth
EIPs from BYOIP ranges can be added to an Internet Shared Bandwidth instance, but only a pay-as-you-go (billed by bandwidth) instance. Billing follows the Internet Shared Bandwidth billing rules.
FAQs
Can I use my own ASN when I bring my on-premises public IP addresses to Alibaba Cloud?
No. To bring your on-premises public IP addresses to Alibaba Cloud, you must change the origin ASN for the IP prefix to the Alibaba Cloud ASN, AS45102. Alibaba Cloud advertises the prefix on your behalf. You cannot use your own ASN.
Is an EIP a native public IP address?
No. A native public IP address is a public IP address assigned directly to a device by an Internet Service Provider (ISP) without going through Network Address Translation (NAT) or a proxy server. The device can use this address to communicate directly with the internet, but this also exposes it to security risks.
An EIP is a virtualized IP address that belongs to Alibaba Cloud. When a resource such as an Elastic Compute Service (ECS) instance uses an EIP to access the internet, traffic passes through NAT. Because of this, an EIP is not a native public IP address.
Do you support BGP (Multi-ISP) Pro EIP advertisement?
Yes. BGP (Multi-ISP) Pro EIP advertisement is supported. Specify this requirement when you submit your BYOIP application ticket.
