You can create ECS instances of supported instance types on your DDHs.
Background
Only VPC-type ECS instances can run on a DDH. Feature differences between ECS instances on dedicated hosts and shared hosts.
For resource flexibility, create pay-as-you-go ECS instances on your DDH, then apply a cost optimization method. Billing of ECS resources on a DDH.
Procedure
Log in to the ECS console.
In the left-side navigation pane, choose .
In the upper-left corner of the page, select a region and resource group.
-
Find the DDH on which you want to create ECS instances, and click Create Instance in the Actions column.
-
On the Custom Launch page, configure the following parameters.
Parameter
Description
Example
Dedicated Hosts
Select the DDH. You can also configure host affinity:
-
Select Associate with Host: Instances always restart on the same DDH. If that DDH lacks resources, the instances fail to start.
-
Clear Associate with Host: Instances may restart on a different DDH in your account. Configure host affinity for an ECS instance.

Billing Method
Select a billing method for the ECS instances. Options depend on the DDH billing method. You can create Subscription or Pay-as-you-go ECS instances on a subscription DDH.

ImportantICP filings are unavailable for pay-as-you-go instances.
Pay-as-you-go
Instance Type
ECS instances must be in the same region and zone as the DDH. Available instance types depend on the DDH host type and remaining resources. Specifications.
-
If the host supports only predefined instance types, select an instance type from the list.
-
If the host supports custom instance types, click Custom Instance Type and use the sliders to set vCPUs and memory. vCPUs increment by 1 (values above 1 must be even). Memory increments by 1 GiB.
ecs.i2.xlarge
Host resources
Total and remaining vCPUs and memory of the DDH.
Keep the default setting.
Current selected instance
Specifications of the selected instance.
ecs.c7.large (2 vCPU 4 GiB, Compute-optimized c7)
Quantity
Number of instances to create.

Images
You can select an image from the Public Image, Custom Images, Share Images, Marketplace Images, or Community Image tab.
Note-
If you want to use an SSH key pair, you must select a Linux image.
-
To configure user data, select a supported image. Images that support user data.
Alibaba Cloud Linux 2.1903 LTS 64-bit
Block Storage
-
System Disk (required): Specify the cloud disk type and capacity. The system disk hosts the operating system.
-
Cloud disk type: All available cloud disk types in the current region.
-
Capacity: The default capacity is 40 GiB (max 500 GiB). If the selected image exceeds 40 GiB, the default matches the image size. Minimum capacity varies by image:
-
Linux (excluding CoreOS and Red Hat): 20 GiB to 500 GiB.
-
FreeBSD: 30 GiB to 500 GiB.
-
CoreOS: 30 GiB to 500 GiB.
-
Red Hat: 40 GiB to 500 GiB.
-
Windows: 40 GiB to 500 GiB.
-
-
-
Data Disk: To add a data disk, specify its cloud disk type, capacity, quantity, and whether to enable Encrypt. You can create an empty cloud disk or create one from a snapshot.
NoteCloud disks created with an instance have the following characteristics:
-
The billing method of the cloud disks is the same as that of the instance.
-
The 'Release with Instance' setting has the following effects:
-
If enabled, the cloud disk is released when the ECS instance is released.
-
If disabled, the cloud disk is retained and converted to a pay-as-you-go data disk if the instance expires, its payment is 15 days overdue, or you manually release the instance. To ensure that cloud disks in the Chinese mainland can be retained, you must complete real-name verification for your account.
NoteRetained cloud disks are billed on a pay-as-you-go basis. You can view the billing details by cloud disk ID in the Billing Management console.
-
-
A single ECS instance supports up to 16 data disks. Block storage quotas.
-
-
If you select an instance family that includes local disks (such as i2), the local disk information is displayed and cannot be modified. Instance families.
Keep the default setting.
Snapshot service
The snapshot service periodically backs up cloud disks to protect against data loss. Select a backup cycle and the disks to back up.
Keep the default setting.

Click Next: Networking. On the Network and Security Group page, configure the parameters that are described in the following table.
Parameter
Description
Example
Network
Alibaba Cloud provides a default VPC. To use a different one, create a VPC and vSwitch in the target region. Create a VPC with an IPv4 CIDR block.
-
VPC: ddh-vpc/vpc-bp1j4z1sr8****.
-
vSwitch: test/vsw-bp155oak33****
Public IP Address
-
To assign a public IP address, select Assign Public IPv4 Address. Then, choose a billing method for network usage (Pay-by-traffic or Pay-by-bandwidth) and specify a bandwidth value. Public IP addresses assigned this way cannot be disassociated from the instance. Public bandwidth billing.
-
Skip this if your instance does not need internet access or if your VPC-type instance uses an Elastic IP Address (EIP) instead. EIPs can be associated or disassociated at any time.
Keep the default setting.
Security Group
Alibaba Cloud provides a default security group. To use a different one, create a security group in the target region. Create a security group.

ENIs
If the selected instance type supports elastic network interfaces, you can add one and select a vSwitch.
NoteBy default, an elastic network interface added during creation is released with the instance. You can detach it later in the ECS console or by calling the DetachNetworkInterface operation.

IPv6 Supported
Enable IPv6 if your business requires it. For supported instance families, see Instance families.
Keep the default setting.

What to do next
If you did not set a logon password when you created an ECS instance, you can set a password for the instance later. For more information, see Reset the logon password of an instance.
You can build an FTP site on an ECS instance to upload files to the instance. For more information about how to deploy the FTP service, see Build an FTP site on an ECS instance.
If you have created data disks along with the ECS instances, you can use the data disks only after they are partitioned and formatted. For more information, see Initialize a data disk whose size does not exceed 2 TiB on a Linux instance or Initialize a data disk up to 2 TiB in size on a Windows instance.
