DataWorks:Business assets

Last Updated:Mar 26, 2026

Business assets are the core, high-value data assets of an enterprise, such as tables and scheduling tasks within a tenant. You can use tags and categories to manage these assets and enable effective governance. This topic describes how to manage and govern business assets.

Features

The data asset governance feature in DataWorks lets you manage business assets. You can use this feature with asset units to classify, manage, and govern data assets, such as tables and scheduling tasks. This process helps ensure the high quality and availability of your business assets.

Supported edition

Only DataWorks Enterprise Edition supports this feature.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, ensure that you have:

  • A DataWorks Enterprise Edition workspace

  • Access to the DataWorks console

Navigate to business assets

  1. Log on to the DataWorks console. In the top navigation bar, select the desired region. In the left-side navigation pane, choose Data Governance > Data Asset Governance. On the page that appears, click Go to Data Asset Governance.

  2. In the left navigation pane, choose Asset > Business Asset to open the Business Asset page.

  3. On the page, view assets by type: Table, Task, Model, or Metric.

To find a specific asset, filter by one or more of the following conditions:

Condition Description
Scope Narrow assets by workspace scope
Asset Name/ID Search by the exact name or ID of the asset
Tag Filter assets that have a specific tag applied
Owner Filter assets by their assigned owner

Set tags

Tags let you categorize and query Table, Task, Model, and Metric assets. For centralized tag management, see Tag management.

Tag a single asset

  1. On the Business Asset page, find the target asset using your search criteria.

  2. Click the image icon in the Tag column of the asset.

  3. Add, modify, or remove tags:

    • Add or modify a tag: Fill in the following fields.

      Field Description

      Tag key

A custom tag key. Each asset supports up to 20 tags. Tag keys must be unique.

      Tag value

      A custom tag value.

    • Remove a tag: Click the image icon next to the tag.

      Note

Some system-attached tags cannot be removed.

Tag assets in bulk

  1. On the Business Asset page, select the assets you want to tag.

  2. Click Configure Tag below the assets list.

  3. Choose a bulk tag mode: Overwrite or Append.

Set categories

Categories let you organize Table, Task, Model, and Metric assets into structured directories. After assigning a category, select an asset unit, a category perspective, and a directory in the left pane to view and govern the target assets.

Categorize a single asset

  1. On the Business Asset page, find the target asset using your search criteria.

  2. In the Actions column of the asset, click Edit Category.

  3. Add, modify, or delete categories:

    • Add a category: Fill in the following fields.

      Field Description

      Asset unit

Select the asset unit for the workspace where the asset is located.

      Category

From the category directory within the asset unit, select an asset category for the asset.

      Publishing status

Set the publishing status for the asset. After an asset is published, it is visible to all members of the tenant.

    • Delete a category: In the Edit Category dialog box, click Delete for the asset unit.

Categorize assets in bulk

  1. On the Business Asset page, select the assets you want to categorize.

  2. Click Edit Category below the assets list.

  3. Select the categories to apply, then save.

Warning

Saving overwrites all previously selected categories on the selected assets.

Run governance operations

For Table and Task assets, run governance operations to improve asset quality and efficiency. Supported operations are graceful undeployment and data governance plan creation (see Create a data governance plan).

Govern a single asset

  1. On the Business Asset page, find the target asset based on the configured asset unit and your search criteria.

  2. In the Actions column, click Governance > Graceful Undeployment.

Govern assets in bulk

  1. On the Business Asset page, select the target assets.

  2. Click Resolve below the assets list to create a data governance plan or perform a graceful undeployment for the selected resources.

View asset details

The Business Asset page supports both search and browse modes for discovering assets.

Browse by category: In the upper-left corner, select an asset unit from the Asset Unit drop-down list. Switch the Category Perspective and select a category directory to browse all assets in that category.

View asset details: In the Actions column, click Details to open the asset detail page. The page includes the following tabs:

Tab Content
Basic properties Core metadata and configuration of the asset
Property details Extended attributes of the asset
Governance optimization Governance operations you can run on the asset
Association information Output Task and Associated Baselines linked to the asset

Under Event Records, view the operation history for all governance actions on the asset.
