DataWorks:Create a data governance plan

Last Updated:Jun 10, 2025

Data Asset Governance of DataWorks provides data governance plan templates for different scenarios. When you create a data governance plan, you can select a template and specify the objective that you want to achieve within the validity period of the data governance plan. Then, the system automatically selects governance items and optimization items based on the type of your data governance plan to help you continuously track data governance effectiveness and assist your team in quickly achieving the governance objective.

Limits

  • Editions

Only DataWorks Enterprise Edition or a more advanced edition supports data governance plans. For information about DataWorks editions, see Differences among DataWorks editions. For information about how to activate DataWorks, see Purchase guide.

  • Permissions

    • Administrators of a workspace can create a data governance plan for all governance issues in the workspace.

    • Other users can create data governance plans only for governance issues that the users are responsible for.

  • Feature usage

You can view the summary only for governance plans that are in the Terminated, Unachieved, or Achieved state.

Go to the Governance Plan page

  1. Go to the Data Asset Governance page.

Log on to the DataWorks console. In the top navigation bar, select the desired region. In the left-side navigation pane, choose Data Governance > Data Asset Governance. On the page that appears, click Go to Data Asset Governance.

  2. In the left-side navigation pane, choose Governance > Governance Plan. The Governance Plan page appears.

Create a data governance plan

Data Asset Governance provides various data governance plan templates in which specific governance scenarios and governance priorities are preset to meet different governance requirements.

  1. Select a data governance plan template.

On the Governance Plan page, click Create Plan. In the Select Data Governance Plan Template dialog box, select a data governance plan template. The following types of governance plan templates are supported: Cost Optimization, Stability Governance, and Custom. The following table describes each type of template.

    Type

    Core objective

    Governance plan template

    Cost Optimization

Limits the increase in data resource costs, focuses on ineffective and inefficient storage and computing resources, and helps governance owners unpublish or optimize resources.

    • Storage_Resource_Optimization: suitable for teams that consume excessive amounts of storage resources or experience a spike in storage resource consumption.

Core objective: Reduce the consumption of storage resources and manage the lifecycles of data tables based on access popularity.

    • Compute_resource_optimization: suitable for teams that consume excessive amounts of computing resources or experience a spike in computing resource consumption.

Core objective: Reduce the total consumption of computing resources and improve utilization of computing resources.

    Stability Governance

Reduces the number of data task issues, focuses on the availability and service-level agreement (SLA) of important data tasks, and helps owners ensure that data tasks can efficiently and stably produce high-quality data.

Data_Stability_Optimization: suitable for teams that want to resolve existing data O&M issues in an efficient manner.

Core objective: Reduce the number of data task errors and ensure the correctness and timeliness of task output.

    Custom

Allows you to select metrics and governance items based on business requirements to address different data governance challenges. This template focuses on your personalized needs and feedback, allows you to configure data governance solutions based on your business requirements, helps you independently manage and optimize data resources, and improves the flexibility and practicality of data governance.

Custom: suitable for customizing governance objectives and tracking governance progress because this template allows you to select known governance issues.

  2. Click Confirmation.

  3. Configure parameters for the governance plan.

    1. Configure the parameters in the Basic Information section.

Specify a name for the governance plan in the Plan Name field and enter a description in the Description field.

    2. Configure the parameters in the Governance Plan Goal section.

In the Governance Plan Objectives section, configure the Core Goal and Validity Period parameters to specify an objective and a period of time in which the objective needs to be achieved. If the goal is met before the validity period ends, the governance plan is achieved.

For example, if you set the goal to Save storage >= 20 GB, you must save at least 20 GB of storage resources to achieve the governance plan.

The following table describes the governance objectives provided by each data governance plan template.

      Governance plan template

      Objective

      Storage_Resource_Optimization

Reduce the consumption of storage resources, number of optimization issues, and number of tables that have issues, and improve the overall health score and storage health score

      Compute_resource_optimization

Reduce the consumption of compute CUs, number of optimization issues, and tasks that have issues, and improve the overall health score and computing health score

      Data_Stability_Optimization

Reduce the number of optimization issues and tasks that have issues, and improve the overall health score and R&D health score

      Custom

All governance objectives of the preceding templates

    3. Select governance objects.

      1. Use the default governance objects.

In the Select Governance Objects section, the system automatically selects governance items from the computing, storage, R&D, quality, and security dimensions based on the governance plan type and then selects all issues that belong to the related governance item by default. In addition, the system estimates the benefits of full governance for the governable issues that are identified by the system and provides the estimation result for the governance owners for reference. The final governance benefits and objective achievement rate vary based on the actual governance scope.

        Note

The default governance items are automatically selected within the current time period by the current governance plan template and governance objectives.

      2. Manage selected governance items.

Click Manage Selected Items to view the governance items included in the current governance plan and manage the governance items based on the objective that you want to achieve. If you do not need to manage some items for a short period of time, you can turn off the switch in the Selection Status column or choose Operations Performed on All Items > Batch Select All Items/Batch Deselect All Items to select or clear the items.

      3. Click Disable. Confirm the governance plan and click Next.

    4. Configure governance members.

By default, governance members include the Plan Owner, Task Handled By, and Viewer.

      • Plan Owner: By default, the current account is the plan owner. The plan owner can create and manage data governance plans and is responsible for promoting and learning governance effectiveness.

      • Task Handled By: The owner of the selected governance issues is automatically added to the governance plan as the task handler. The task handler can view the task items for which the task handler is responsible in the governance plan.

      • Viewer: You can click Add Member to add members that can view the governance plan and receive governance notifications.

    5. Configure governance progress notifications.

In the Progress Notification section, you can configure the Recipient, Periodic Notification Time, and Method parameters. After the governance plan is published, the system collects statistics on governance tasks and progress on a daily basis based on the governance objective. The statistics are displayed on the details page of the governance plan. The system also provides periodic data governance summaries and an automatic notification mechanism to assist the governance owners with their governance work and help them achieve the data governance objective in an efficient manner.

  4. Click Save and Publish to publish the plan.

View the execution details of a governance plan

You can find governance plans that are in the Executing state on the Governance Plan page. To view the execution details about a governance plan, find the governance plan and click Governance Details in the Actions column.

You can configure the Workspace, Data Source Type, Table Owner, Operation Status, and Tag search conditions or enter an asset name or ID in the search box above the Ungoverned table to filter governance items. You can create an undeployment plan for governance items that have penalty points or do not need to be managed or add them to the whitelist. You can also click Table 360 in the Actions column to view table details. For more information, see Graceful undeployment and Invalid whitelist.

Note

The tags that are added to governance items shown in this section are offline snapshots and cannot be edited. Tags that are modified or added on the Tag Management page are not updated in real time. The tag data takes effect after T + 1 days. For more information, see Manage tags.
