DataWorks:Built-in logic of a default workspace

Last Updated:Feb 22, 2024

This topic describes the built-in logic of a default workspace.

Background information

The first time you activate DataWorks or if you activate DataWorks in a new region, the system performs the following operations:

  1. Generates a default workspace.

You can quickly get started with development operations without the need to make preparations.

  2. Associates an exclusive resource group for scheduling or an exclusive resource group for Data Integration with the default workspace when you create the resource group.

After the association, you can directly use the resource group in the default workspace and perform operations in the environment that is automatically built.

  3. Initializes typical cases for the default workspace.

You can quickly get started with DataWorks by running the typical cases.

Precautions

We recommend that you do not develop tasks for the production environment in a default workspace.

Basic properties of a default workspace

The following table describes the properties of a default workspace and a custom workspace. You can define basic properties for a workspace based on your business requirements in an actual development scenario. For information about how to create a workspace, see Create a workspace.

Property

Default workspace

Custom workspace

Workspace name

The name of a default workspace is in the default_workspace_Four-digit random code format. You cannot change the name of a default workspace.

You can specify a name for a custom workspace. The name cannot be changed after the workspace is created.

Workspace display name

By default, the display name of a default workspace is Default Workspace. You can change the display name.

You can specify a display name for a custom workspace. The display name can be changed after the workspace is created.

Workspace mode

By default, a default workspace is in basic mode. You can upgrade a default workspace from the basic mode to the standard mode. For more information, see Scenario: Upgrade a workspace from the basic mode to the standard mode.

You can create a workspace in basic mode or standard mode.

Workspace administrator

The workspace administrator varies based on the account that is used to activate DataWorks:

  • If you activate DataWorks by using an Alibaba Cloud account, the workspace administrator of a default workspace is the Alibaba Cloud account.

  • If you activate DataWorks as a RAM user, the workspace administrator of a default workspace is the RAM user and the Alibaba Cloud account to which the RAM user belongs.

The workspace administrator of a custom workspace is the same as that of a default workspace.

Time zone for scheduling

By default, the time zone for scheduling of a default workspace is the local time zone. For information about how to change the time zone for scheduling for a workspace, see Scenario: Change the time zone for scheduling.

The time zone for scheduling of a custom workspace is the same as that of a default workspace.

Visible scope of a default workspace

  • Tenant members can view and access only custom workspaces to which the tenant members belong. The roles of a tenant member in a custom workspace are assigned by the workspace administrator when the workspace administrator adds the tenant member to the custom workspace.

  • All tenant members can view and access a default workspace. When a tenant member accesses a default workspace, the system assigns the Visitor role to the member. The workspace administrator of a default workspace can assign roles to the members in the workspace on the Workspace Members tab of the Workspace page in the DataWorks console.

Addition of data sources or registration of clusters to a default workspace

The system automatically generates a MaxCompute data source for a default workspace. You can directly use the data source to run cases provided by DataWorks in the default workspace to experience the services and features of DataWorks. In actual development scenarios, we recommend that you create a workspace based on your business requirements. You can add data sources or register clusters based on which you want to perform development operations to the workspace and then associate the data sources or clusters with DataStudio. For example, you can add MaxCompute and Hologres data sources or register E-MapReduce (EMR) clusters. For more information, see Create a workspace or Add a data source or register a cluster to a workspace.
