Compute Nest:Overview of monitoring and alerting

Last Updated:Jun 06, 2025

Compute Nest provides a comprehensive system monitoring solution that consists of CloudMonitor-based resource monitoring and Prometheus-based application monitoring. This solution ensures fine-grained and comprehensive performance monitoring and health management for cloud resources at the software and hardware levels. By building such a monitoring ecosystem, Compute Nest allows service providers and customers to obtain the usage information of service instances from multiple perspectives, respond to potential issues at the earliest opportunity, optimize resource allocation, and improve service stability and business efficiency.

Overview

Monitoring: allows service providers and customers to manage resources from different services and regions by group. Service providers and customers can use application groups to manage resources, such as servers, databases, load balancers, and storage resources, in a centralized manner. For example, service providers and customers can manage alert rules and view monitoring data by application group. This improves O&M efficiency.

Alerting: sends alert notifications when the metrics meet the alert conditions. Threshold-triggered, event-triggered, group process, and host availability alert rules are supported. For more information, see Create an alert rule.

For more information about the Alibaba Cloud services that are supported by CloudMonitor, see Supported cloud services and their system events.

CloudMonitor-based resource monitoring

Compute Nest integrates with CloudMonitor to provide an out-of-the-box resource-level monitoring solution. This solution supports IT infrastructure monitoring and dial testing for Internet connections. It is a business monitoring solution based on events, custom metrics, and logs. In addition, Compute Nest provides a comprehensive alerting system to enable service providers and customers to efficiently respond to and handle issues. This solution provides the following benefits:

  • Out-of-the-box monitoring: After service instances are created, service providers and customers can directly view the monitoring data of the resources that are supported by CloudMonitor without the need to configure monitoring settings.

  • Emergency alerting: Service providers and customers of private and fully managed services can configure alert templates and alert contacts for cloud resources so that they can respond to and handle emergencies at the earliest opportunity.

  • Flexible grouping: Compute Nest supports application groups that allow service providers and customers to manage resources from different services and regions by group and apply alert templates by group. This helps build an efficient monitoring and alerting management system.

Prometheus-based application monitoring

Compute Nest integrates the Prometheus agent of Managed Service for Prometheus to provide an application-level monitoring solution. Compute Nest provides Grafana dashboards to visualize monitoring data and help identify performance bottlenecks. In addition, Compute Nest provides alerting capabilities based on AlertManager.

This solution provides the following benefits:

  • Wide application range: Compute Nest integrates Prometheus to provide accurate application-level monitoring for diverse cloud computing environments such as Container Service for Kubernetes (ACK) clusters and Elastic Compute Service (ECS) clusters.

  • Data isolation and security: In multi-tenant scenarios, tags are added to the monitoring data of the tenants to ensure data security and isolation. The monitoring data of each tenant is independent of each other and exclusive to each tenant. This prevents data breach or abuse.

  • Intuitive data visualization: The built-in Grafana dashboards allow service providers and customers to view monitoring data from a macro perspective. Data is visualized in various types of charts, tables, and panels. This allows even customers without a technical background to easily understand the operating status of a system.

  • Simple configuration: Compute Nest supports automated configuration and GUI-based configuration. This frees service providers and customers from complex monitoring parameter configuration. Service providers and customers can easily configure Prometheus monitoring by clicking buttons and entering simple values without the need to understand the underlying mechanism.
